The meet, aside from a few noticeable absences, will be a prelude of sorts for the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships taking place September 13 to 21.

Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis loves to compete. He continues to soar, having broken his world record in the pole vault this summer, vaulting to a height of 6.29m on August 12 in Budapest.

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, who has run 10.93 this season, will be competing in the 100m as well as the 200m. She ran the 200m in 22.14; her seed times are the second and third fastest in the respective fields. Only Julien Alfred with her 10.75 and McKenzie Long and (21.93), and Anavia Battle (22.13) have run faster this season. Alfred from St. Lucia is the reigning Olympic champion.

A pair of Australian women in the 1500m event could, in theory, go 1-2, with Jessica Hull having the Oceania record and Linden Hall coming off of a lifetime best performance a week prior, clocking in a 3:56.33 on August 22 in Brussels. Hall aggressively created a very large gap on the field in that race. She was hunted down by American Nikki Hiltz for her first-ever Diamond League win, but the performance was her all-time best.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Femke Bol will have to trip to lose as she is by far the fastest in the field and the second fastest in the world at the event behind only American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who holds the world record.

In the men’s 1500m event, it will be a battle of the youth with teenager Phanuel Koech from Kenya, with his 3:27.72 best against Laros Niels of the Netherlands, with his best of 3:29.54. Head-to-head, Laros took out Koech with a smooth striding kick in Brussels. The two are ages 18 and 20, respectively.

Azzedine Habz from France is also in the field and has run the fastest time this season at 3:27.49 at age 32. American Yared Nuguse might have something to say about that, but so far in 2025, the Paris Olympic bronze medallist is still three seconds back in seasonal performances.

While the meet will provide a good preview of Tokyo, there are a number of big names missing. Some are cooling their jets before Worlds, while others did not qualify. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be a medal threat in Tokyo, but will not be there. Defending 100m World champion Sha’Carri Richardson is out. The sprints will still be exciting, with several sub-10 men and sub-11-second women toeing the line and the equivalent in the 200m and 400m events.

Several middle-distance athletes are out, leaving room for others to have one last go before the big games in Tokyo.
