Aug 6 (Reuters) – Roche said on Thursday it launched two new tests to detect cyclospora, as \u200cU.S. cyclosporiasis cases climbed to record levels \u200cthis year making the foodborne-illness outbreak one of the largest in \u200bthe country’s recent history.<\/p>\n
The Swiss healthcare company is collaborating with its subsidiary, TIB MOLBIOL, for supply of the tests.<\/p>\n
Here are some details:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Roche’s two PCR tests, which \u200cdetect pathogens by identifying \u2060their genetic material, can find cyclospora and other gastrointestinal parasites.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The test portfolio allows \u2060laboratories to choose between screening for one, three or six parasites across different testing platforms, helping them tailor \u200bcosts to \u200btheir needs, TIB MOLBIOL \u200bCEO Marcus Droege said.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200cEarlier this week, U.S. health authorities said they widened their probe into a cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico after detecting cases in six additional states, raising the total to 15 states.<\/p>\n
\u2022 \u200cSo far about 6,358 cases \u200bhave been reported from 15 states \u200bwith at least \u200b278 hospitalizations, according to the CDC and \u200cFDA. The agencies’ surveillance, however, \u200blags state \u200breporting by several weeks.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Cases have risen steadily across the United States in recent months, according \u200bto the U.S. \u200cCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, with reports \u200bfrom 47 states.<\/p>\n
