On August 9, the 73rd French Logging Championship took place at the Alpine resort of Chamruss, located southeast of Grenoble. About 60 participants competed in manually splitting logs with axes, demonstrating speed, precision, and endurance, according to Euronews.<\/p>\n

Timekeepers stopped the stopwatch when the chopped-off piece was finally separated from the log. The best time of the day was 4.49 seconds.<\/p>\n

The championship has been held in Chamrousse since 1953. During breaks between rounds, participants prepare identical logs and sharpen their axes. Some athletes wear chain-mail leg guards to protect themselves from accidental axe blows.<\/p>\n

Among the participants was eight-time French champion Pierre Puybare, who also holds the world record in the single-buck sawing discipline. Organizer Pascal Gade explained that the event began as a friendly competition among local lumberjacks but later began to attract participants from neighboring regions.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the competition has drawn about 2,000 spectators. The championship helps preserve traditional logging skills in the region, even though modern forestry has been transformed by chainsaws and mechanical logging machines.<\/p>\n
