The war with Iran enters its sixth week. As well, major new inflation data is due out this week and earnings season is just ahead, with banks starting to report on April 14. Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1%, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both rose 2%. Year to date, all three indices are showing losses, with the Dow, down 3%, the S&P lower by 4%, and the Nasdaq off by 6%. On the earnings calendar, there are a few scattered reports this week. Levi Strauss reports on Tuesday; and Shell, Delta Air Lines, and Constellation Brands on Wednesday. The new earnings season unofficially kicks off on April 14, when several of the country’s big banks report. On the economic calendar, new data on Durable Goods Orders is due on Tuesday; the minutes from the Fed’s May rate meeting on Wednesday; Personal Consumption Expenditures (inflation) and the final revision of GDP on Thursday; and the Consumer Price Index (more on inflation) on Friday. The timing of the inflation data is off plan. PCE will reflect February data while CPI will represent March. The impact of the war in Iran is starting to show up in economic forecasts. Gas prices jumped another three cents and are at an average of $3.99 per gallon for regular gas. The Atlanta Fed GDPNow now forecasts 1.6% growth for 1Q, down from 3.0% a few weeks ago. The Cleveland Fed Inflation Nowcast forecasts 3.3% for April, about even with the March forecast. Mortgage rates have made another big move higher, up eight basis points last week, with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage now at 6.46%, according to FreddieMac. The next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is on April 29. Odds have pivoted from a rate cut to a rate hike, though they are low at 1% (suggesting no likely move of any kind). President Trump’s nominee to be the next Fed chair, Kevin Warsh, is still making his way through the Congressional-approval process. Currently Chair Jerome Powell will remain on the FOMC. Taking a deeper dive into performance so far in 2026, a leading industrialized global stock market index, the ETF EFA, is up 2% year to date. The leading emerging market ETF (EEM) is up 3% year to date. U.S. growth stocks are down 10% year to date looking at ETF IWF, while value stocks (IWD) are up 1%. In other asset classes for the year to date, AGG bonds are down 1%, gold is up 7%, crude oil is up 92%, and Bitcoin is down 23%. The U.S. dollar is up 2%, tracking DXY. The VIX Volatility Index was at about 24 on Friday, above its historical average of 20. Turning to sector performance, the list from first to worst so far in 2026 is Energy (+40%), Utilities (+7%), Materials (+7%), Consumer Staples (+6%), Industrials (+3%), Real Estate (+3%), Healthcare (-7%), Communication Services (-11%), Information Technology (-12%), Consumer Discretionary (-12%), and Financials (-13%). By comparison, the S&P 500 is down 4% year to date. <\/a> <\/p>\n

With the current stock turmoil, global stocks, and especially stocks that pay dividends, are a potential option for investors. While the S&P 500 has fallen 12% year to date, the EAFE Index of large- and mid-cap stocks based in countries other than the U.S. and Canada has gained 1%. That’s quite a change from the recent record. Over the past five years, the S&P 500 has advanced 109% compared to a 50% gain in EAFE. But the underperformance has given global stocks a valuation advantage, particularly in the area of dividends. Consider that the EAFE dividend yield of 3.0% is roughly 175 basis points higher than the comparable S&P 500 dividend yield. We think global dividend stocks continue to offer opportunity, particularly given the endless speculation over the direction of interest rates in the U.S., which has created market-timing headaches for equity income investors. These investors have endured recent wide swings in prices for rate-sensitive equity groups such as utilities, REITs and MLPs. In our view, investing in international income stocks is one way to increase portfolio diversification while reducing sensitivity to volatile U.S interest rates. Investing in overseas stocks carries its own set of risks, including the impact of currency exchange and geopolitical turmoil. For our list this week, we are focusing on the Healthcare Sector, which we rank as one of our favorites with an Over-Weight rating. Healthcare was an outperformer in 2022, falling only 4% while the S&P 500 dropped 19%, but has lagged in the early weeks of 2023. We think the recent relative weakness may offer a buying opportunity. Post-COVID, consumers are more willing to spend on lifestyle enhancements along with necessary spending on life-saving treatments. In addition, the survival of the Affordable Care Act has kept the ranks of insured U.S. citizens above the historical average, further increasing consumer spending on healthcare services and products. Meanwhile, companies with experience in diagnostic testing, vaccines, and antiviral medicines, as well as suppliers of protective equipment and other hospital products, have benefited from efforts to contain the pandemic. Healthcare is a sector that includes many categories and investing disciplines. It is innovative, can be either growth or value, and can involve start-ups or mature companies. A healthcare company can be built around one product that is leveraged in broad and creative ways, or a company with depth, breadth and products that have many touchpoints. Many of the companies are truly science-based, some with managers who are stronger as scientists than as executives running a company; others have scientists focus on science while practiced managers mind the books. The Healthcare sector accounts for 15% of the S&P 500, with an overall market cap of $1.4 trillion dollars. Subsectors include Biotechnology, Healthcare Distributors, Healthcare Equipment, Healthcare Supplies, Life Sciences Tools and Services, Managed Healthcare, and Pharmaceuticals. We think investors should Over-Weight the sector and consider allocating about 15% of their diversified portfolios to stocks in the sector. As global markets stumble along with rising inflation and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one thing has not changed: U.S. stocks are more expensive than global stocks on numerous valuation metrics. The P\/E ratio on the S&P 500 is 18x, above the global average of 13x and well above the 10-12x average P\/Es for emerging markets stocks. A review of price\/sales ratios tells a similar story. The U.S. ratio is 3.0x, far higher than the global average of 1.7x, while China appears to be a deep value at 1.1x. Yields are only slightly different. The current dividend yield for the S&P 500 is 1.5%, versus the global average of 2.0% and Europe’s yield of 2.8%. One reason investors pay a higher price for North American securities is the transparency of the U.S. financial system. What’s more, global returns can be volatile across individual countries, given currency, security, political, and geopolitical risks: indeed, U.S. stocks are outperforming EAFE YTD in 2022 — as well as over the past five years.
