MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) – A former Hartford, Alabama insurance agent has been sentenced to prison time for his role in falsifying claims to a federal crop program.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Lawrence Eubanks, 46 of Slocomb, will spend 18 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release. He will also pay a $1,000 fine and $30,164.14 in restitution.<\/p>\n
Eubanks had been selling insurance policies covered by the Federal Crop Insurance Program since 2017, with these policies supporting farmers against certain losses of crops due to weather, natural disasters and other covered events.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors accused Eubanks of forging signatures and providing fake documentation in efforts to obtain federal crop insurance coverage for a Covington County farmer in 2024.<\/p>\n
\u201cCrop Insurance fraud directly harms taxpayers who subsidize insurance premiums and undermines public trust,\u201d said USDA Inspector General Walk. \u201cIt will not be tolerated. Our law enforcement agents will vigorously pursue those who cheat the crop insurance program that supports honest, hardworking American farmers and bring the fraudsters to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
