{"id":115093,"date":"2026-08-13T15:41:39","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T15:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/115093\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T15:41:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T15:41:39","slug":"oscars-switzerland-selects-who-is-still-alive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/115093\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscars: Switzerland Selects &#8216;Who is Still Alive&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWho is Still Alive,\u201d a documentary directed by Nicolas Wadimoff that gives voice to Gaza humanitarian crisis survivors and refugees, has been selected by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture as <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/switzerland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_switzerland\" data-tag=\"switzerland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switzerland<\/a>\u2018s entry for the Academy Award for best international feature film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe documentary, which looks at the lives of nine Palestinian people who escaped the crisis in Gaza and explores the loss of home against the backdrop of the Gaza War, had its world premiere in Venice at the 2025 Giornate degli Autori, AKA Venice Days, sidebar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor director Nicolas Wadimoff, \u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d is his third film dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/palestine\/\" id=\"auto-tag_palestine\" data-tag=\"palestine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palestine<\/a>, following \u201cAisheen (Still Alive in Gaza)\u201d about the aftermath of Israel\u2019s 2008 air strikes on the Gaza Strip and \u201cThe Apollo of Gaza\u201d in 2018.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cFilming with the protagonists had to be organized in South Africa, one of the few countries where Palestinians from the Gaza Strip can enter without a visa,\u201d according to a statement from promotional body Swiss Films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn early 2026, \u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d scored the Prix de Soleure at the Solothurn Film Festival and was nominated for best documentary at the Swiss Film Awards. The doc has continued to screen at many international fests, most recently in the Panorama Suisse section of this year\u2019s Locarno Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the U.S., \u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d will be released in movie theatres by Watermelon Pictures, the distributor who handled Kaouther Ben Hania\u2019s multi-award-winning, Oscar-nominated, Tunisian film \u201cThe Voice of Hind Rajab.\u201d The film\u2019s Swiss distributor is First Hand Films. \u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d will be released in French theaters in October by distributor Una Mattina. It has also been sold to the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d was produced by\u00a0Nicolas Wadimoff, Philippe Coeytaux, and Ketsia Stocker\u00a0of the Geneva-based production company Akka Films, where Nicolas Wadimoff also serves as founder and producer.\u00a0Co-producers include Easy Rider Films (Paris), Philistine Films (Palestine\/Jordan), Cocoon Films (London), and RTS Radio T\u00e9l\u00e9vision Suisse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRepresenting Switzerland at the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars<\/a> with our film \u201cQui Vit Enore\u201d (\u201cWho is Still Alive\u201d) is a great honor that fills us with joy,\u201d Wadimoff said in a statement. \u201cAt the same time, it is a great responsibility to make the bodies and voices of the film\u2019s protagonists visible and audible\u2014all of them survivors of the hell of Gaza who were confronted with the unspeakable, yet remain alive and standing tall,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt is also an opportunity to loudly and clearly champion the values that have made Switzerland what it should continue to be: a country of humanism and humanity, of dialogue , and of respect for others. We will do our best to live up to this selection,\u201d the director continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14.
