{"id":115113,"date":"2026-08-13T16:35:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/115113\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T16:35:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:35:06","slug":"switzerland-picks-gaza-doc-who-is-still-alive-as-2027-oscar-submission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/115113\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland Picks Gaza Doc Who is Still Alive as 2027 Oscar submission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/switzerland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_switzerland_1\" data-tag=\"switzerland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switzerland<\/a> has selected Nicolas Wadimoff\u2019s Who is Still Alive, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/venice-who-is-still-alive-gaza-survivors-exclusive-clips-1236351850\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">documentary about nine Palestinian refugees<\/a> who escaped the violence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/gaza\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gaza_1\" data-tag=\"gaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaza<\/a>, as its official pick for the 2027 Oscar race in the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international<\/a> feature category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn his experimental doc, Wadimoff has the Palestinian refugees recreate the experiences of their escape from Gaza on a barren stage marked out by chalk outlines, in the style of Lars von Trier\u2019s Dogville. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWho is Still Alive premiered in the Venice Days selection of the Venice Film Festival last year, and was picked up by Watermelon Pictures for U.S. release, with a domestic rollout planned for later this year. First Hand Films are handling international sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe documentary was produced by Wadimoff\u2019s Geneva-based Akka Films in co-production with French group Easy Rider Films, the Palestinian\/Jordanian Philistine Films and Cocoon Films out of London, along with Swiss public broadcaster RTS Radio T\u00e9l\u00e9vision Suisse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWatermelon released two international features that made last year\u2019s Oscar shortlist: Annemarie Jacir\u2019s  Palestine 36, Palestine\u2019s official submission, and Cherien Dabis\u2019 All That\u2019s Left of You, Jordan\u2019s Oscar contender. There were also producers on Kaouther Ben Hania\u2019s Oscar-nominated The Voice of Hind Rajab, which was Tunisia\u2019s official Academy Award submission. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tInternational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/documentaries\/\" id=\"auto-tag_documentaries_1\" data-tag=\"documentaries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">documentaries<\/a> rarely succeed in securing an Academy Award nomination, but there are exceptions. Jonas Poher Rasmussen\u2019s animated doc Flee was a triple Oscar nominee, for best documentary,  best animated feature, and best international feature, in 2021. Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov\u2019s documentary Honeyland was the first film from North Macedonia to receive an Oscar nomination in 2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAMPAS will announce the 15 films on the Best International Feature Film shortlist on Dec. 15. The five nominees will be announced Jan. 21, 2027.
