The company Sifas, which manages cable cars and other facilities on Stelvio, explained that the temperature remains too high during the day and does not drop enough at night.

Because of this, the condition of the glacier does not allow for ensuring proper slope quality and the necessary level of safety for skiers. The exact date for resuming the slopes is not yet announced. Staff continue to monitor the weather and the glacier’s condition.

At the same time, access to the mountain is not closed. The cable car continues to operate, so tourists can ascend to the glacier, but without the possibility of summer skiing.

Stelvio is not the only well-known ski area in Europe that has faced the consequences of the heat this summer. Earlier, summer skiing was stopped in the Matterhorn area. At the end of July, the Swiss company Zermatt Bergbahnen announced the suspension of ski slope operations on the Theodul glacier at an altitude of about 3000 meters.

On the Italian side, from where lifts depart from Breuil-Cervinia, access to Plateau Rosa remained open, but only for tourists — without the possibility of regular summer skiing.

A difficult situation also developed in the Mont Blanc area. The lift from the Italian side was suspended, and in France, for safety reasons, two mountain huts — Tête Rousse and Goûter — were closed.

Even at significant altitude, unusually high temperatures have been recorded this summer. According to ANSA, at the Arpa station on the Forni glacier, located at an altitude of over 2000 meters, the temperature reached 17 degrees Celsius.

At the Marinelli pass, approximately at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level, about 9 degrees Celsius was recorded.

For glaciers, where stable snow and ice conditions are traditionally expected in summer, such weather creates serious problems. Operators are forced to consider not only the possibility of operating lifts but also the condition of the glacier itself and the safety of tourists.

Subscribe to our Telegram channel t.me/sudua and to Google News SUD.UA, as well as to our VIBER and WhatsApp pages, on Facebook, on Instagram and on X to stay informed about the most important events.

The lift from the Italian side was suspended, and in France two mountain huts were closed for safety…

[16
50
post-116670","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-alps","tag-alps
["GET
