Despite a man driving his car off a boat ramp on Thursday, there is currently no active investigation into the incident by the New Bern Police Department.<\/p>\n
According to Colleen Roberts, public information officer for the city of New Bern, a man went off a boat ramp at Union Point Park in New Bern on Thursday. New Bern Fire and Rescue responded to the scene after receiving reports of a car in the Neuse River with a person inside.<\/p>\n
Roberts said a police officer and a firefighter, Lt. Jason Williams with the police department and Capt. Justin Sawyer with fire and rescue, were able to safely remove the man from the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not sure what caused the car to end up in the water,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n
The man was taken to CarolinaEast after his rescue, and no medical issues have since been reported, including no reports of intoxication, substance abuse or mental health crises.<\/p>\n
Roberts said she has no knowledge of whether the event was a suicide attempt or medical emergency, nor any information about the state the individual was in when he was being rescued or whether he was cooperative with officers.<\/p>\n
According to Roberts, the only thing to be officially filed concerning the incident so far by a city department is a crash report containing time and location data, driver and vehicle specifics, contributing circumstances and the responding officer\u2019s official crash narrative.<\/p>\n
Roberts said there are currently no plans to release the name of the occupant of the car going forward. She did not state a reason why.<\/p>\n
