In fact, the Swiss banking sector manages over 20% of the world’s cross-border privately held assets, cementing its status as a nucleus of wealth. No one has taken greater advantage than Gianluigi and Rafaela Aponte, the husband-and-wife duo behind Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest shipping line.

Gianluigi, a former ship captain from Naples, first met Rafaela—the daughter of an Israeli banker based in Switzerland—on a trip to the island of Capri in the 1960s. They entered the shipping industry together in 1970, purchasing their first vessel with a $200,000 loan. Following in Rafaela’s father’s footsteps, they based the firm in landlocked Geneva, and over the following decades grew MSC from their Swiss headquarters into a global juggernaut spanning everything from ships and ports to hospitals and high-speed rail. The Apontes, whose fortunes jumped 18% in the past year as MSC continued a yearslong spending spree on port terminals and made an exceptionally well-timed bet on oil tankers, are now each worth an estimated $44.5 billion. That’s good for nearly a third of all Swiss billionaire wealth.

Despite MSC’s worldwide reach, the Apontes remain firmly rooted in their adopted home. In April, they announced they would pass ownership of the firm to their children Diego and Alexa, noting that both scions were “brought up in Switzerland and currently residents of the country.”

The Apontes are far from the only tycoons who have found great success in Switzerland. In all, there are 89 billionaires living in Switzerland, 38 of whom are citizens, according to Forbes’ calculations—or roughly 10 billionaires for every million citizens, making the small nation one of the world’s most influential billionaire hubs. Another four Swiss billionaire citizens live in the United Kingdom, the United States or Monaco. Counting just the citizens, the Swiss three-comma club is worth a collective $278.2 billion—equivalent to nearly a quarter of Switzerland’s annual GDP—up from $242.7 billion in 2025, as the country’s blue-chip index, the SMI, returned 10% over the past year thanks to stable stocks such as Nestlé, Roche and Novartis.

Switzerland’s wealth story traces back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance era, when, given the lack of natural resources, the nation’s most valuable export was its mercenaries. As the elite troops returned from fighting in foreign wars, a growing need to keep their money safe gave way to private banking houses. Switzerland’s rugged geography and longstanding policy of neutrality shielded the country from the conflicts for hundreds of years, helping its financial ecosystem grow while keeping taxes down. Tens of thousands of French Huguenots fled to Switzerland around the turn of the 17th century, many among them skilled watchmakers and bankers. A longstanding insistence on banking secrecy solidified the country as a global safe haven, luring the super wealthy.

That spirit is still alive and well. Thirty percent of Switzerland’s billionaire citizens were actually born elsewhere. That includes Ivan Glasenberg (estimated net worth: $13.7 billion)—the country’s third-richest person, after the Apontes—who grew up in Johannesburg, studied business and accounting in South Africa, then got an MBA at the University of Southern California before taking a job as a coal marketer in the South Africa unit of commodity trading giant Glencore. In 1994, he moved to Switzerland—where the company was founded in 1974 and remains headquartered, in the 25,000-person town of Baar—to take a job as Glencore’s worldwide director of coal. He became CEO in 2002, orchestrating a massive $11 billion IPO in 2011 and a $90 billion mega-merger with Xstrata in 2013 that created a commodities and mining powerhouse, before retiring in 2021. Glasenberg remains Glencore’s single largest individual shareholder, with just over 10%. Since January, the stock has climbed 35% amid soaring copper prices rising partly from the global demand for AI data centers.

Other foreign-born citizens include Margarita Louis-Dreyfus ($5.6 billion), the Soviet-born widow of French-born commodities heir Robert Louis-Dreyfus; and Karl Scheufele III ($2.5 billion), the German-born goldsmith and watchmaker who in 1963 moved to Switzerland and purchased the luxury jewelry brand Chopard from Paul-André Chopard, the founder’s grandson who had no interest in taking over the Geneva-based business. Among the further 50 billionaires who call Switzerland home but are primarily citizens of other countries: Italian-born financial software kingpin Andrea Pignataro, Canadian-born fashion and Formula One mogul Lawrence Stroll and Brazilian-born financier Jorge Paulo Lemann, whose 3G Capital has investments in Anheuser-Busch, Burger King and Tim Hortons.

In all, Switzerland’s billionaires got rich across a dozen industries. They owe their fortunes to everything from finance and watchmaking to train cars and dental implants. There are seven billionaires in manufacturing, which still makes up a quarter of the Swiss economy. That includes four members of the Blocher family, heirs to the EMS-Chemie polymer and chemical fortune; Peter Spuhler ($5.4 billion), who built up railcar maker Stadler Rail; and Michael Pieper ($4.8 billion), who controls kitchen appliance manufacturer Franke.

Nearly three-quarters of the economy now stems from the services sector. The finance and investments industry, naturally, remains key—with eight Swiss billionaires, second most on our ranking. That includes Italian-born Ernesto Bertarelli ($11.5 billion) and his sister Dona ($7.4 billion), whose family moved its pharmaceuticals company to Switzerland in 1977; Thomas Straumann ($5.3 billion), whose grandfather founded Straumann Holding, the world’s largest manufacturer of dental implants; and Willy Michel ($5.7 billion), the cofounder of Ypsomed, best known for its self-injection pens that are used to treat or manage everything from diabetes to weight loss and fertility. The company, based in the small town of Burgdorf (population: 17,000), saw its profits double in its latest fiscal year, ending in March, thanks largely to the surging demand for weight loss drugs. Meanwhile, three members of the Grogg family behind the Bachem pharma giant fortune also made Switzerland’s three-comma club, as did two members of the Oeri clan behind pharma behemoth Roche.

In all, 18 of the nation’s 42 billionaire citizens are self-made, meaning they largely founded their fortune, rather than inheriting it.
