With global instability growing by the day, one company has found a business opportunity hidden beneath the mountains of Switzerland. A family-owned firm with years of experience in excavation and controlled blasting is drilling deep into the Alps to create a high-security underground complex. The goal is to offer the ultra-wealthy a fully protected space where they can safeguard their most prized possessions. Securing a spot, however, comes at a steep price, with lease agreements reportedly costing around \u20ac1 million ($1.1 million).<\/p>\n

An underground refuge that can even be mortgaged<\/p>\n

The driving force behind the ambitious project is Swiss entrepreneur Thomas Gasser. His plan calls for the construction of as many as 25 reinforced galleries carved into the rock, giving wealthy clients a place to store everything from art collections and jewelry to rare wines and luxury automobiles. The scale of some of the vaults is particularly striking, with the largest expected to span nearly the size of a soccer field.<\/p>\n

Investors who decide to buy in will sign 99-year lease agreements. Entry-level options start at around \u20ac500,000 ($585,000), with the final price rising depending on the amount of space required and any custom features requested by the client. What sets the development apart is that tenants are not simply renting an underground storage unit. Their space is registered in the Swiss land registry under their name and functions much like a conventional property, one that could even be used as collateral for a mortgage in the future.<\/p>\n

From shooting range to maximum security<\/p>\n

The idea of working inside the mountain is nothing new for Gasser. The project\u2019s roots stretch back to the 1990s, when he first used a gallery near Lungern as a private storage facility. Over the years, that tunnel evolved considerably, at various times housing a restaurant, a shooting range, and even a training center where firefighters practiced tackling underground blazes.<\/p>\n

As you might expect from a facility of this nature, security procedures remain closely guarded. Accessing the site requires passing a series of stringent checks. The process includes an isolation area where owners must leave their vehicles before moving through multiple layers of identity verification. Project officials are reluctant to disclose the technical specifics, but they say the complex provides the same level of protection as that used by the Swiss National Bank.<\/p>\n
