(WITN) \u2014 On a rainy Saturday, the spirit of rebellion and remembrance was alive in New Bern as community members gathered to mark the 252nd anniversary of the New Bern Resolves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A ceremony honoring a historic moment 252 years ago when 71 determined North Carolinians gathered at Tryon Palace, launching the state\u2019s first Provincial Congress in open defiance of British rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">While weather forced the annual celebration out of Tryon Palace and into the Harrison Center, the change of venue did not dampen the spirits of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), who turned out in full force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to get out to our community, out to North Carolina,\u201d said Gary Gillette, president of the SAR New Bern Chapter. \u201cJust don\u2019t forget your history, how we got here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The event, which featured choral music and a marching color guard, focused heavily on the importance of remembering every individual contribution to American history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lynne Smith, a guest speaker and member of the DAR Major William Chronicle Chapter, spoke on the crucial need to remember the patriotic women whose contributions are often omitted from history books. Smith ended her speech with a call to action for attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cEveryone should find one woman who was a patriot and try to find her story,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy, but what she did for us is worth the time it takes to do the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This year marks the third year that the SAR and DAR have partnered with Tryon Palace to host the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Tryon Palace Executive Director Chrystal Regan echoed the need for historical preservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cOur goal is to make sure everyone who contributed to the growth and to developing this part of North Carolina that their voices are heard,\u201d Regan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Organizers reassured attendees that more commemorative events honoring local historical figures are planned for the future. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WITN.
