The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued more than 150 notices to food business operators in recent months over alleged misleading advertisements, false claims and violations of labelling requirements.

The regulator disclosed the enforcement action on Saturday, naming several major food, beverage and consumer health companies among those facing scrutiny.

The companies named by FSSAI include Nestlé India, PepsiCo India, Abbott India, Red Bull India, Danone India, Monster Energy India, Hell Energy, Mondelez India, Coca-Cola India, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, Ferrero India and Kenvue.

FSSAI said the action forms part of a wider enforcement drive against food business operators for violations of food safety laws and regulations. The regulator has also seized products from several companies as part of its recent action.

Energy drink and alcoholic beverage makers have come under particular scrutiny, with the regulator examining compliance with applicable food safety, advertising and labelling requirements.

The crackdown has also extended beyond manufacturers and brand owners. FSSAI said it issued 12 notices to e-commerce platforms, including Amazon India and Flipkart.

In one significant action, the regulator said an Amazon warehouse licence had been cancelled.

Restaurants and food service operators have also been pulled into the enforcement net. More than 30 notices have been issued to establishments including KFC India, McDonald’s India, Pizza Hut India, Domino’s India and Costa Coffee.

FSSAI said it has also suspended five Domino’s licences as part of the enforcement action. The regulator had issued notices to several five-star hotels last year as well.

The latest move comes amid closer regulatory scrutiny of claims made on food and beverage packaging and in advertising. FSSAI has previously pushed companies to modify labels where claims were found to be inconsistent with regulatory requirements.

The regulator said several companies have already started taking corrective measures following the notices. Such action can include changes to product labels, advertising claims or other compliance-related practices.

The latest enforcement drive signals a broader push by FSSAI to ensure that food businesses, from large manufacturers and online retailers to restaurants, comply with food safety, labelling and advertising rules. For consumers, the message is fairly simple: when the label makes a big claim, regulators are now taking a closer look at the fine print.

NEW DELHI: The food regulator is turning up the heat.
