Roche (USOTC:RHHBY) and Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) have secured clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a blood test designed to help detect signs associated with Alzheimer’s disease in people aged 55 and older who are experiencing cognitive decline. <\/p>\n

The Elecsys pTau217 test measures a blood-based biomarker that can assist healthcare professionals in determining whether patients are likely or unlikely to have brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. <\/p>\n

Elecsys pTau217 Builds on European Approval <\/p>\n

The U.S. regulatory decision follows European approval of Elecsys pTau217 in May, extending the potential reach of the diagnostic tool into another major healthcare market. <\/p>\n

Roche said the test can be performed using more than 4,500 of its laboratory analysers already installed across the United States. The extensive existing equipment base could make it easier for healthcare providers to introduce the test without requiring specialised new testing infrastructure. <\/p>\n

Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics Plan to Offer Test <\/p>\n

Availability is expected to expand further through major U.S. laboratory networks. <\/p>\n

Labcorp (NYSE:LH) and Quest Diagnostics (NYSE:DGX) have said they intend to make Elecsys pTau217 available through their respective laboratory operations, potentially giving patients and healthcare providers broader access across the country. <\/p>\n

Roche has not disclosed how much the test will cost. <\/p>\n

Blood Test Could Simplify Alzheimer’s Assessment <\/p>\n

Existing approaches for detecting amyloid, a protein closely associated with Alzheimer’s disease, commonly involve positron emission tomography, or PET, imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. <\/p>\n

These procedures can be expensive, invasive or difficult to access, creating demand for simpler diagnostic options. A blood-based biomarker test could provide physicians with a more accessible tool for assessing patients showing signs of cognitive decline. <\/p>\n

Alzheimer’s Diagnostics Market Gains Momentum <\/p>\n

The FDA clearance comes as pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies increase investment in technologies capable of identifying Alzheimer’s disease earlier and more conveniently. <\/p>\n

Interest in improved testing has grown alongside the development of new treatments, as earlier identification of patients with Alzheimer’s-related changes could play an increasingly important role in determining eligibility for therapy and managing the disease. <\/p>\n

For Roche and Eli Lilly, the U.S. clearance of Elecsys pTau217 represents another step towards making blood-based Alzheimer’s testing part of routine clinical assessment, supported by Roche’s extensive installed laboratory network and planned availability through Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics. <\/p>\n
