(WITN) – A major intersection in downtown New Bern is closed for the next month as part of the city’s ongoing crosswalk improvement project.

The intersection of Pollock and Middle streets is out of commission as part of the work.

Sabrina Bengel, a managing partner at The Birthplace of Pepsi Cola on Middle Street, said she is not too worried about an extra drop in customers. She said the upgrades will be worthwhile in time for MumFest this fall.

“At some point, we have to grow, and we have to improve. So, we see this crosswalk as an improvement for our beautiful downtown,” Bengel said.

Bengel said the Municipal Service District Advisory Committee recommended the project. She said downtown property owners, not general taxpayers, pay for the project through a tax dedicated solely to local improvements.

“For those who are complaining, we have put our money where our mouth is, and we have said we want improvements in our downtown. We want it to be better. Okay, we’re going to pay a tax,” Bengel said.

The city said the Board of Aldermen approved the crosswalk project in June 2025. The project involves removing the current surface, excavating below the street, and installing new concrete bases and brick pavers.

Damiya Bradley, an assistant manager at Anchored in New Bern, NC on Middle Street, said she has noticed a slowdown, but it is too early to see the full impact of the construction.

“It’s not usually as slow these days, and I think it may be because the road is blocked off, or it could just be that it was raining yesterday,” Bradley said.

The intersection is fenced off with detour signs for pedestrians. Drivers have restricted access, but sidewalks to downtown shops remain open.

The city said project timelines are dictated by budgets and resources, as well as local event calendars and seasonal traffic.

Copyright 2026 WITN.
