From legendary museums and haute horlogerie workshops to elite boutiques along Rue du Rhône, this is the ultimate watch lover’s itinerary through Geneva and the Jura Arc.

Geneva’s status as the world’s unofficial watch capital is undisputed. This is the very heart of haute horlogerie, the very pinnacle of the art of watchmaking. The city’s horological traditions are an integral part of the quintessential Geneva experience.

Dubbed as Switzerland’s Watch Valley, the 200 km stretch between Geneva and Basel along the Jura Arc emerged as the centre of the country’s world-renowned horology traditions. Spend a few days in Geneva and you will learn to distinguish between an heirloom Swiss watch and a device that merely tells you the time.

In the lap of luxury

Pick one of Geneva’s legendary luxury hotels that offer you easy access to the city’s finest watch boutiques and museums. The Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva has been a city landmark since 1834 when it opened as Switzerland’s very first grand hotel. The hotel’s half-day watchmaking and whisky experience combine a private tour of the Roger Dubuis manufacture with an exclusive Michel Couvreur whisky tasting and gourmet experience.

Do consider the Hôtel des Horlogers in Le Brassus (about an hour away) owned by Audemars Piguet that offers a “Watch Lovers” package with two tickets to the Espace Horloger museum nearby.

Start your Rue du Rhone journey at the Patek Philippe Salon: It is much more than just a retail store (Photo: Switzerland Tourism)

Museum mode

The region’s horological museums are a great place to start. The Patek Philipe museum in Geneva also offers tremendous insights of how this region benefitted from the flight of talented watch makers, goldsmiths and enamellists from France during the Reformation. The museum captures the evolution of timepieces at a time when most people really didn’t care about the precise time. From rare chronographs to ornamental timepieces crafted specially for the Chinese nobility in the 19th century, this museum offers captivating vignettes.

More from WatchesAlong the Jura arc

Le Chaux-de-Fonds makes for the perfect day trip (less than two hours away from Geneva). The city has been the centre of watchmaking since the 18th Century. Along with the town of Le Locle, this city has been recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site for demonstrating a fascinating symbiosis between the watch industry and urban planning. The city’s unique grid-street plan laid emphasis on natural light – an essential for watch technicians.

The city’s most visited attraction is the International Museum of horology with over 4000 pieces is among the world’s largest and is home to rare exhibits like Giovanni de ’Dondi’s Astrarium, a 14th century mechanism that depicts the movement of the sun, moon and planets.

Geneva’s Watch and Wonders will open to the public from April 9 to 11, 2027 (Photo: Switzerland Tourism)

Play watchmaker for the day

In case you want to try your hand at getting the hands ticking yourself, enrol for a one of the many workshops (like Schneider & Co Watch Assembly) in La Chaux-de-Fonds. You get to wear a white smock and a loupe headband as you wait for your turn at the workbench. You can assemble a watch under the watchful eye of an expert. I tried one of the workshops at Initium, in the heart of Geneva’s old town, where you can create your own Swiss watch. For about US $20,000 you can sign up for their top-of-the-line Tourbillion Course, that commences with an immersion in the history of watchmaking, narrated by their Master Watchmaker, who highlights subtleties of the tourbillon complication. You will then be invited to select each component of your tourbillon watch and assemble it yourself at the workbench.

The world’s ultimate watch high street

Rue du Rhone has the highest concentration of ultra-luxury watch boutiques in any shopping district in the world. Start your Rue du Rhone journey at the Patek Philippe Salon, that’s more than just a retail store. The salon is home to a wide selection of Patek Phillipe timepieces and limited editions. I’d also suggest a stop at Bucherer that offers one of the widest collections of Rolex watches in the world. Walk to the other high-end watch boutiques along Rue du Rhone. From Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Rolex, F.P. Journe and IWC, you can experience the unique personality and traditions of these brands play out in their flagship stores.

Plan a meal at one of Geneva’s most popular new restaurants: F.P. Journe Le Restaurant, a unique collaboration between iconic independent watchmaker François-Paul Journe and acclaimed Michelin-starred Chef Dominique Gauthier.

Plan your trip

Swiss first class (with direct connections to Zurich from Mumbai and Delhi) is the best way to arrive. Geneva is three hours away from the Zurich airport by train. Try and schedule your trip during Geneva Watch Day (On from September 2 to 6 this year) with events across the city and where nearly 70 watch maisons and independent brands will showcase their latest creations. Geneva’s Watch and Wonders (open to the public from April 9 to 11, 2027), the world’s premier luxury watch trade show, is a hub for watch lovers.

Geneva is the beating heart of Swiss watchmaking, where centuries-old craftsmanship meets modern luxury.
