And where the interests of sport and the athletes are threatened, we will always come to their defense.\u201d<\/p>\n \u25cf Athletics \u25cf The Weltklasse Zurich<\/a> meet opened on Thursday with the women\u2019s vault at the Zurich Hauptbanhhof \u2013 the central train station \u2013 with American Hana Moll, fresh off her Diamond League win in Lausanne (SUI), continuing to shine.<\/p>\n Still just 21, Moll needed third tries to make the opening heights of 4.50 m (14-9) and 4.65 m (15-3), but cleared 4.75 m (15-7) on her first. Six were jumping at 4.85 m (15-11) but only Moll and European champ Angelica Moser (SUI) could clear, both on their second attempts. American stars Katie Moon and Sandi Morris tied for third at 4.75.<\/p>\n On to 4.90 m (16-0 3\/4), which would be a lifetime best for both. Moll was over immediately and Moser failed three times, leaving the American with her second Diamond League win, a PR and the 10th woman to reach 4.90 m indoors.<\/p>\n Moll had jumped 4.88 m (16-0) indoors in Seattle in January; she now ranks equal-8th all-time indoors and equal-5th all-time U.S. However, she did not get the family record, as she still trails sister Amanda Moll, who cleared 4.91 m (16-1 1\/4) indoors in 2025.<\/p>\n \u00b6<\/p>\n On the final day of the World Humanoid Robot Games<\/a> in Beijing (CHN), a robot \u201cran\u201d the 100 m in the fastest time yet, of 8.64 seconds, lowering the best time from 8.86 in the semis. The robot model is the Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Innovation Center of Humanoid Robotics.<\/p>\n As usual, all five robots in the \u201crace\u201d smashed into the upright foam pit at the end of the straightaway and four fell to the ground and were covered by fire extinguishers as they began to spark. All were carried away for repair.<\/p>\n \u25cf Biathlon \u25cf A three-person working group appointed by the USA Biathlon Board has been working since the end of July on a draft agreement to move the governing body\u2019s operations to U.S. Ski & Snowboard while preserving its \u201cgovernance autonomy\u201d as required by Federal law.<\/p>\n According to a mid-August posting<\/a>, the draft agreement is to be presented \u201cto the full Board for review and approval in advance of a Board meeting on August 29, 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n The draft agreement is not planned to be shared publicly before Saturday\u2019s meeting. USA Biathlon Communications Manager Sara Donatello explained, \u201cWe will be sharing an outline of the general details with our membership at the appropriate time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u25cf Cycling \u25cf The hilly, but manageable 173.3 km fifth stage of the 81st Vuelta a Espana saw a mass sprint finish, with British rider Matthew Brennan winning his second stage in 3:47:02 saw the top 89 riders received the same time. Jordi Meeus (BEL) and Vincenzo Albanese (ITA) finished 2-3.<\/p>\n Race leader Tadej Pogacar (SLO) finished 49th and maintained a 3:21 lead over countryman (and four-time Vuelta winner) Primoz Roglic and 3:32 on Spain\u2019s Enric Mas. The next two stages will present some climbing challenges and possible leaderboard shifts.<\/p>\n \u25cf Fencing \u25cf USA Fencing announced<\/a> that actor Mandy Patinkin will be an honorary team captain for the American fencing squad at the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Patinkin is a \u201cfencing immortal\u201d for his role as Inigo Montoya in the 1987 classic, \u201cThe Princess Bride.\u201d<\/p>\n This is part of the USA Fencing Ambassador Program, working with the International Fencing Federation (FIE) and World Para Fencing to introduce new audiences to the sport.<\/p>\n \u25cf Figure Skating \u25cf Olympic women\u2019s gold medalist Alysia Liu<\/a> of the U.S. will not be skating competitively this season, as she explained on Instagram on Tuesday:<\/p>\n \u201cWhile people are announcing programs, imma take this time to announce that I will not be competing this season.<\/p>\n \u201cI always want to challenge myself in new ways, so my artistry & skating can evolve. It\u2019s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth. I\u2019m gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things & whatnot. She \u201cretired\u201d after the 2022 season \u2013 at 16 \u2013 but returned for the 2024-25 season and won the World Championships gold.<\/p>\n \u25cf Football \u25cf The BBC reported that UEFA has stepped back<\/a> from a threatened boycott of FIFA competitions, starting with the FIFA women\u2019s U-20 World Cup, starting in Poland on 5 September.<\/p>\n The story quoted a source as explaining, \u201cIt is not a Uefa defeat, rather the reality of avoiding hurting young players [in a] once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.<\/p>\n \u201cThe actions and insistence on change will continue, and will win out in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n UEFA had made its boycott plan conditional on receiving guarantees that FIFA will no longer explore private-investment programs; such guarantees were apparently made.<\/p>\n \u25cf Luge \u25cf The head of the Russian Luge Federation, Natalia Gart<\/a>, told the Russian news agency TASS that the International Luge Federation (FIL) will consider the reintegration of Russian athletes in November instead of September as expected:<\/p>\n \u201cThe FIL Executive Committee has decided to postpone the extraordinary congress dedicated to the issue of Russian athletes\u2019 participation in International Luge Federation competitions from September 24 to November 12.<\/p>\n \u201cThe International Luge Federation cited several reasons for this decision: awaiting the outcome of the CAS [Court of Arbitration for Sport] lawsuits between Russian sports federations and international federations, in order to avoid similar proceedings against the FIL; monitoring the developments surrounding the participation of Russian athletes in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal; and awaiting the International Olympic Committee\u2019s decision on Russian participation in the 2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u25cf Swimming \u25cf NBC television audiences were down for the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine from 15-16 August, compared to the USA Swimming Nationals on 1-2 August:<\/p>\n Pan Pacific Championships: USA Swimming National Championships: All of these were highlight programs and not live coverage. No audience figures were available for the sessions shown on Peacock and NBCSN.<\/p>\n These swimming audiences have been well behind NBC audiences this year for gymnastics and track & field, but the events in those sports were shown live.<\/p>\n \u00b6<\/p>\n The International Swimming League, which put on three seasons of team competition in 2019-20-21, then fell victim to continuing losses and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, announced a 2026 \u201cAll-Star Match<\/a>\u201d to take placed on 19 December 2026 in London (GBR).<\/p>\n The format is a four-team match with 24 athletes per team (men and women): U.S., Commonwealth, Europe and Rest of the World.
