Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti<\/a> sits at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites in Pinzolo, a location so beautiful it looks practically Photoshopped. An iconic Dolomites spa hotel, its entire wellness philosophy is built around Classical Chinese Medicine. The idea is balance: Qi, the five elements, the push and pull of fire and water, exertion and stillness. <\/p>\n The spa spans over 5,000 square metres and is divided into four symbolic zones – the Green Dragon, Red Phoenix, White Tiger and Black Tortoise – each designed to either stimulate or restore. I gravitated towards the Black Tortoise, the water element: floating in the salt-water pool, resting in the salt grotto and experiencing a sublime salt scrub treatment, all while taking my time in a way I rarely get to do at home.<\/p>\n Courtesy of the hotel<\/p>\n Lefay Dolomiti\u2019s three-night Active & Balance Yin Yang Programme pairs the spa with guided mountain hikes. My excellent guide Martina led me through the Trentino region’s Val Nambrone, a hiking route where the glacial meltwater runs in a magical shade of turquoise. Here we stopped to taste wild strawberries, squeezed resin from spruce trees (known for its anti-inflammatory properties) and waded barefoot through a cold mountain stream (Kneipping). One afternoon brought an aufguss sauna session choreographed to orchestral music, which was both theatrical and deeply energising. The indoor-outdoor heated pool with massage jets, healthy menus designed for those on wellness programmes and the unique sauna rituals complete the experience – few places in the Dolomites do wellness this well.<\/p>\n BOOK A STAY<\/a><\/p>\n Best for a proper medical retreat: Park Igls Medical Spa Resort, Igls, Austria<\/p>\n If you’ve reached the point where a spa weekend won’t cut it, Park Igls<\/a> is a place worth knowing about, and easily ranks among the best medical retreats in Europe. Set in the Tyrolean village of Igls, near Innsbruck, at the foot of the Patscherkofel Mountain, this is <\/p>\n clinical wellness at its finest. The team includes GPs, therapists, sports scientists, psychologists and masseurs, many of whom have been here for over 20 years. It has a 72 per cent returning guest rate, which says it all.<\/p>\n Park Igls follows the Modern Mayr method, an evolution of Dr FX Mayr’s original detox principles, updated to include protein, exercise and self-discovery. Every guest gets a personalised dietary plan, ranging from herbal tea fasting to a full Modern Mayr menu. One habit that forever changed my relationship with food was learning to chew every mouthful 40 times. It incorporates craniosacral therapy, heated moor compresses and talking therapy. By midweek, I was waking naturally earlier for 7.20am guided walks and the Kneipping circuit (included in every programme), moving slower and feeling something I hadn’t felt in months – I was able to hear birdsong, something I rarely have the headspace to listen out for in London, and I felt lighter all over. For newbies to the medical retreat or those unsure of a programme to choose, the Detox Classic programme combines five massages over seven days and access to a diverse programme of medical relaxation and exercise activities – it’s a great programme for your first visit.<\/p>\n Chef Markus Sorg’s cooking deserves more than a mention, too, for his local fish, meat and seasonal vegetables with delicious, gut-friendly flavour. When general manager Adrien de Haller told us that the hotel doesn’t take itself too seriously, he meant it. The owner, an Englishman, took over in 2014 and turned it into something that feels more like a beautiful English country house than a Swiss ski hotel.<\/p>\n Its spa is one of the largest in Switzerland and among the finest Alpine spas – 17 thermal areas, 10 treatment rooms, a salt grotto and regular aufguss sessions. The signature Goat’s Milk and Honey Bath is the treatment to go for after a day on Gstaad’s 200 kilometres of slopes. During my visit, I went straight for the aufguss ritual in the outdoor sauna, before rotating between the jacuzzis and a swim in the indoor pool. <\/p>\n Courtesy of the hotel<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the hotel, the lounge has a quirky personality: birdcage seats hanging from the ceiling, a vintage rocking horse repurposed as a bench, giant board games for evening entertainment. Leonard’s restaurant, named after the camel that stands at its entrance, has an Italian influence. The signature spaghettone, served in a pan at the table, is the comfort food you want after a day on the mountain. The peaks here are massively imposing, set against rolling meadows so green they just about look real. The sound of cowbells drifts across the valley as you walk the 9km trail to the glacier-fed Ferchensee lake, and it’s easy to understand why Ludovico Einaudi was so taken with these paths that he recorded parts of his Seven Days Walking album series here. If you happen to be staying when he’s performing in the concert hall – as I once was – you\u2019ll agree it’s one of the most magnificent experiences you can have at a hotel.<\/p>\n Music has been at the heart of Schloss Elmau<\/a> since it was built in 1916 as a cultural retreat. Today it hosts around 150 concerts a year, and world-class performers – from Martha Argerich to Maxim Vengerov – come under a play-to-stay arrangement. It also hosted the G7 Summit in 2015 and 2022, and staying in the Retreat, the newer of its two hotels, means sleeping in suites that have welcomed heads of state, all without the formality.<\/p>\n Courtesy of the hotel<\/p>\n Bringing a unique warmth to Germany’s mountains, you’ll find an elephant motif running throughout the rooms, a nod to Ganesha, the Indian symbol of wisdom and beginnings. The six spas across Schloss Elmau\u2019s Hideaway and Retreat hotels each have their own character, too. The Nature Spa, with its sauna and lap pool beside the Ferchenbach creek, is the one where I spent most of my time: I moved from the heat straight into the glacier-cold water with the forest surrounding me. There is also a Japanese onsen, the Oriental Hamam and adults-only outdoor infinity pools.
