A manhunt is underway in Switzerland following a deadly shooting at a rave in the early hours of Sunday morning, local time.<\/p>\n

Police in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau wrote on X that a 22-year-old woman died of injuries at the scene.<\/p>\n

Four men and one woman, between 24 and 27 years old, were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe.<\/p>\n

All of the victims are residents of Switzerland, police said. They did not release their names in line with Swiss privacy rules.<\/p>\n

Emergency services have cordoned off the area with a major police operation involving police in Freiburg, in neighbouring Germany.<\/p>\n

“The manhunt is continuing nonstop at full speed,” police spokesperson Bernhard Graser told reporters.<\/p>\n

“In terms of its nature, this incident is certainly unique in recent years,” Mr Graser said.<\/p>\n

“We don’t yet know the full extent of it, but based purely on the circumstances, it is something truly extraordinary. That’s why there’s such a large police presence.”<\/p>\n

He said police had no information yet about possible motives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked whether a terrorist attack was a possibility, Mr Graser said that “the fact that the rave was already winding down suggests that’s not the case. A fight could also be a possibility.”<\/p>\n

Public shootings are rare in the alpine country despite relatively widespread gun ownership.<\/p>\n

Residents were advised to stay away from the area cordoned of and heavily populated by emergency services.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Swiss daily Blick reported that visitors of the rave initially mistook the shots for fireworks until somebody shouted “everyone down”.<\/p>\n

The newspaper wrote that the shooting took place right after the rave ended. Police later took all remaining visitors to a nearby gym, Blick reported.<\/p>\n

Police called on possible witnesses who have video or photos of the incident to share them with police.<\/p>\n

Aarau has about 22,300 residents and is 46km west of Zurich. It is about 30km south of the German border.<\/p>\n
