After a slight earlier misfire with its debut, Porsche is finally ready to show off the all-new 911 GT3 Bergsport<\/a> ahead of the Arosa ClassicCar hill climb in Switzerland, where the car will make its rolling debut at the hands of J\u00f6rg Bergmeister on September 3. Ahead of that, however, the automaker has revealed all the details about this limited-production model honoring the brand\u2019s lasting presence in the Alps.<\/p>\n

The Porsche GT3 Bergsport is a limited-run project curated by the team at Exclusive Manufaktur<\/a>, with a focus on paying homage to the Alpine region. As such, the car is only slated to be available in Austria, France, Italy, and Switzerland, and just 100 units are slated for production. The package itself is based on a GT3 Touring<\/a> with the optional lightweight package; every Bergsport model is also slated to be offered as a six-speed manual, ensuring the lasting desirability of these machines.<\/p>\n

That said, there are a few unique changes to the car compared to your run of the mill GT3s. The Lightweight package usually includes magnesium wheels and a rear seat delete as part of the equipment, but that isn\u2019t the case with the Bergsport. Instead, the brand has developed forged aluminum rims for the car, which Porsche says are more resilient to the road conditions one might find in the Alps. Furthermore, the existence of the rear seats here allows customers to share the experience with more than just one passenger, meaning it’s essentially as practical as a minivan. There\u2019s even an extended range fuel tank, to make sure you can take in as many of those alpine vistas in one go as possible.<\/p>\n

Other unique touches to the Bergsport include bespoke Valleygreenmetallic [sic] paint, which is said to draw its hues from the rocks and, well, valleys of the region. Those forged aluminum wheels are finished in a combination of White Gold and Ceramica, aiming to recreate the vibe of snowy mountain peaks. The brakes are finished in a new orange hue that Porsche says conjures thoughts of \u201calpenglow,\u201d or the hues produced at first and last light in the Alps. A checkered flag motif on the luggage compartment serves as a nod to the 908 Bergspyder <\/a>hill climb racer.<\/p>\n

While Porsche was founded in Stuttgart in 1931, the company\u2019s operations moved to Gm\u00fcnd, Austria in the mid-1940s as Allied bombing raids against manufacturing hubs became more consistent. The Austrian town would remain home for Porsche\u2019s operations until 1950. As such, Gm\u00fcnd is where the brand\u2019s first sports car, the 356, was designed, engineered, and produced in its early days; just over 52 cars would be produced in Austria, split between 44 coupes and eight cabriolets. Those cars remain some of the most valuable Porsches around.<\/p>\n

The Porsche 911 GT3 Bergsport will make its rolling debut amongst a course of 76 corners over some 4.5 miles of twisting roadways. Given that Bergmeister is quite simply one of the quickest drivers around, I imagine the car will put on a great show. For many of us, that might be the last time we ever see one of these things moving under its own power … unless, of course, the Alpine-based Porsche collectors out there want to prove us all wrong.<\/p>\n
