ZURICH, June 24 (Reuters) – Switzerland has \u200cstarted contract negotiations with manufacturers from France, Israel and South Korea for a second air defence system following delays to its order of U.S. Patriot missile systems, the government \u200bsaid on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Switzerland in 2022 ordered Patriot missile defence systems made by \u200bRaytheon (RTX.N), opens new tab<\/a> and Lockheed Martin(LMT.N), opens new tab<\/a> for expected delivery by 2026-2028, but \u2060the timeline had been pushed back four to five years due to the \u200bwar in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Swiss defence ministry said it had now restarted previously paused<\/a> payments \u200bto the U.S. over the Patriot system, and that delivery could be possible from 2027.<\/p>\n

The ministry said it had begun talks with manufacturers from France, Israel, and South Korea for a second system, without \u200bsaying which. National armaments director Urs Loher told a press conference that it \u200bwould not be Israel’s Arrow defence system.<\/p>\n

Swiss defence minister Martin Pfister said the second order \u200cwould likely \u2060be significantly more expensive than the initial Patriots price tag of around 2 billion francs ($2.5 billion).<\/p>\n

Pfister said the objective was to obtain a system for Switzerland and that if the Patriot order did not materialise, then the second \u200bsystem should be in \u200bplace as soon \u2060as possible.<\/p>\n

Switzerland had made the decision due to the “deteriorating security situation” which meant the neutral country needed to be \u200bable to defend itself against attack as quickly as possible \u200band to \u2060have additional capacity aside from the Patriot system.<\/p>\n

“In addition, a second system reduces dependence on a single provider and a single supply chain, thereby strengthening security of \u2060supply,” \u200bthe ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

When Switzerland said \u200blast month that it was considering<\/a> missile defence acquisitions beyond the Patriot system, Germany had also been named \u200bas a potential supplier.<\/p>\n
