{"id":126004,"date":"2026-09-04T15:16:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T15:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/126004\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T15:16:06","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T15:16:06","slug":"swiss-government-backs-nationwide-conversion-therapy-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/126004\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss government backs nationwide conversion therapy ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Swiss government has said it supports a nationwide ban on so-called conversion therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation on its website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/swiss-politics\/federal-council-open-to-national-legislation-against-conversion-therapy\/91991884?linkType=guid&amp;utm_source=multiple&amp;utm_campaign=swi-rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_content=o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a> the government officially announced its position in a report it published on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neuch\u00e2tel in 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/society\/first-law-banning-conversion-therapies-passed-in-switzerland\/48480678\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">became the first Swiss canton to ban conversion therapy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers in Valais and Vaud have also prohibited the widely discredited practice in their respective cantons. Bern and Geneva are among the other cantons in which lawmakers have considered similar prohibitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission earlier this year said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2026\/05\/13\/european-commission-says-all-eu-countries-should-ban-conversion-therapy\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"98979830\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all European Union countries should ban conversion therapy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but lawmakers in neighboring Germany in 2020 passed a law that prohibits conversion therapy for minors and for adults who have not consented to undergoing the widely discredited practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several EU countries \u2014 Belgium, Cyprus, France, Malta, Norway, Portugal, and Spain \u2014 have banned conversion therapy outright. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dutch Senate in June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2026\/06\/17\/netherlands-to-ban-conversion-therapy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved<\/a> a bill that would ban conversion therapy in the Netherlands. The lower house of the country\u2019s parliament approved the measure in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greece in 2022 banned conversion therapy for minors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Swiss government has said it supports a nationwide ban on so-called conversion therapy.
