Yuhan is teaming up with Novartis Korea to expand sales of Rhapsido, a treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria whose active ingredient is remibrutinib. The move pairs clinical development of the company’s own pipeline with distribution and sales of an outside drug, strengthening its capability across the full life cycle of new medicines in allergic disease.<\/p>\n
Yuhan said on the 7th that it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Novartis Korea covering domestic distribution, sales and joint promotion of Rhapsido. Under the deal, Yuhan takes sole responsibility for distribution in Korea, while promotional activity is split \u2014 Novartis Korea covers general hospitals and Yuhan handles clinics and smaller hospitals.<\/p>\n
Rhapsido is the first oral Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor approved in Korea for chronic spontaneous urticaria. In April it received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for adult patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by H1 antihistamine treatment.<\/p>\n
Chronic spontaneous urticaria is a condition in which mast cells activate and release inflammatory mediators such as histamine, causing recurring wheals, angioedema and itching. Rhapsido selectively inhibits BTK, which is involved in the activation of mast cells and basophils, reducing the release of inflammatory mediators. That mechanism differs from existing antihistamines, which block histamine receptors.<\/p>\n
In the global Phase 3 trials REMIX-1 and REMIX-2 that supported the approval, Rhapsido significantly improved the weekly urticaria activity score (UAS7) at 12 weeks compared with placebo. The improvement held through 24 weeks, and a 52-week analysis showed that reductions in itching and wheals, seen from the first week of dosing, were sustained.<\/p>\n
Yuhan is also running a multinational Phase 2 trial of lesigercept, its own allergic disease treatment, in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. Because the company will now develop a clinical-stage candidate while simultaneously handling distribution, sales and marketing for Rhapsido, it is expected to deepen its understanding of chronic spontaneous urticaria treatment in Korea and to build the sales and distribution base needed to commercialize new drugs later.<\/p>\n
