This position was expressed in a speech delivered today, Tuesday, by\u00a0Omar Zneiber, ambassador\u00a0and Morocco\u2019s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, on behalf of the countries supporting this stance, during the proceedings of the\u00a063rd session of the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
Zneiber emphasized that\u00a0the Sahara issue remains a\u00a0political conflict\u00a0that falls within the purview of the Security Council, and noted that\u00a0autonomy within the framework\u00a0of Moroccan sovereignty constitutes, according to the approach adopted by the Council, a realistic and viable option for resolving the conflict.<\/p>\n
The Moroccan diplomat linked this position to\u00a0Security Council Resolution No. 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which revived the political process and called for\u00a0negotiations involving\u00a0the four parties, based on the Moroccan autonomy initiative, with the aim of reaching a\u00a0final and acceptable political solution.<\/p>\n
Likewise, the group welcomed Morocco\u2019s\u00a0update\u00a0on the details of the autonomy initiative, as well as its\u00a0commitment to integrate\u00a0the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps on an equal footing with the rest of Moroccan citizens, in accordance with relevant\u00a0international guarantees and practices.<\/p>\n
This initiative comes at a time when international\u00a0attention is increasing\u00a0on the transition from conflict management to the search for a\u00a0viable political solution, as the dates for the UN meetings on this matter, scheduled for this coming\u00a0October, draw nearer.<\/p>\n
The Moroccan side believes that ending the conflict is linked not only to a\u00a0political solution, but\u00a0also to paving the way for\u00a0greater development and\u00a0stability in the region, in line with the\u00a0aspirations of its peoples.<\/p>\n
