(WITN) &#8211; A New Bern habitual felon will spend more than nine years in prison after he pled guilty to drug charges from 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">District Attorney Matt Wareham sentenced D\u2019Vonta Gibbs to between 9 years and 9 months and 12 years and 9 months, and gave a $50,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Prosecutors say the 33-year-old was convicted on two counts of trafficking an opioid, possession with intent to sell or deliver fentanyl, and possession with intent to sell or deliver ANPP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">It was back in September 2023 that state Alcohol Law Enforcement agents surveilled 2012 Opal Street for drug activity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">New Bern police say they saw Gibbs drive away from the target location and pulled him over due to a suspended license.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officers say they noticed an odor of pot from the car, and Gibbs, who was on probation and wearing an ankle monitor, admitted to carrying drugs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">They seized half an ounce of marijuana and .4 ounce of ANPP\/fentanyl during a search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Both the New Bern Police Department and the state Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency handled this case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WITN.
