{"id":13315,"date":"2026-02-19T20:35:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T20:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/13315\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T20:35:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T20:35:29","slug":"martin-chubb-from-newbury-abused-power-of-attorney-to-defraud-relative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/13315\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin Chubb from Newbury abused power of attorney to defraud relative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A man is in custody after he abused his power of attorney to defraud a vulnerable relative.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Chubb appeared in the dock at Reading Magistrates\u2019 Court on Thursday, January 22.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 5760 3840\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"YFIWDPFLCF63J8XHDO4P.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.50\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/YFIWDPFLCF63J8XHDO4P.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 58-year-old, of Grove Court, off Newtown Road, Newbury, admitted committing an offence of fraud in Newbury between January 1, 2020, and January 20 this year.<\/p>\n<p>He did so by abusing his power of attorney, specifically, by acting against, or not safeguarding, the financial interests of Patricia Chubb in order to make a financial gain for himself.<\/p>\n<p>A power of attorney is a legal document that allows someone to appoint one or more trusted people to make decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated due to illness, accident or age.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrates declined further jurisdiction and sent the case to be sentenced by a judge, with greater sentencing powers than their own, sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Chubb was meanwhile remanded in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrates said they were declining to release him on bail due to the nature and seriousness of the offence and because of the likely sentencing outcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A man is in custody after he abused his power of attorney to defraud a vulnerable relative.
