{"id":14188,"date":"2026-02-20T14:36:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T14:36:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/14188\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T14:36:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T14:36:45","slug":"vitol-backs-3bn-lng-plant-at-durban-port-infrastructure-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/14188\/","title":{"rendered":"Vitol Backs $3bn LNG Plant at Durban Port Infrastructure Woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"2\" data-end=\"268\">A recent report by Verto identifies weak port and rail infrastructure as the biggest barrier to trade in South Africa, with congestion and inefficiencies particularly harming perishable agricultural exports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"486\">Vitol is backing a $3 billion LNG power plant at the Port of Durban to help shift the country away from coal and supply gas-fired power to the national grid.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"652\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged new public\u2013private partnerships in ports and rail to modernise infrastructure while preserving public ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/verto.co\/about-us\/resources\/whitepapers-and-reports\/south-african-agricultural-exporters-report\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> has identified weak port and rail infrastructure as the single biggest barrier to trade in South Africa, where talks are underway to build a major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradefinanceglobal.com\/finance-products\/petrol-and-gas-finance\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">liquefied natural gas (LNG) <\/a>power plant on the port of Durban \u2013 the country\u2019s busiest container terminal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report by cross-border payments company Verto highlighted inefficiency in port operations, equipment breakdowns, rising demurrage costs, and capacity constraints as the most prevalent challenges to South African trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global commodity trader Vitol announced on Monday, 19 February, that it backs the construction of a <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/global-trader-vitol-backs-dollar3billion-gas-plant-in-africas-most-industrialised\/cpvvvkt\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$3 billion<\/a> LNG power plant in the port of Durban. The port of Durban, which carries around <a href=\"https:\/\/thebusinessyear.com\/article\/port-series-durban-south-africa\/?srsltid=AfmBOopR5UebLG13zETiDJgkXXW-VYHjmLRa7bI5vWhnyZAIgaKWSYf2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">4,500<\/a> commercial ports each year, is over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oreateai.com\/blog\/durban-port-a-diamondclass-hub-at-the-southern-tip-of-africa\/512e17d570ca99341b1477fa0138654a\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">200<\/a> years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vitol-backed project <a href=\"https:\/\/constructionreviewonline.com\/vitol-proposes-3-billion-lng-to-power-project-at-durban-port\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">aims<\/a> to provide electricity to the country\u2019s national grid through imported LNG and use LNG to power high-capacity turbines \u2013 contributing to the energy transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is still seeking regulatory approvals and navigating financial frameworks, but for South Africa, gas is a crucial step away from coal, which supplies most of the coastal country\u2019s electricity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By supporting this project, Vitol aims to gain a strong foothold in a market targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/vitol-backs-proposed-3-billion-lng-power-plant-south-africas-durban-port-2026-02-16\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">16 gigawatts<\/a> of new gas generation by 2039. Ports can be optimal for such projects; they can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradefinanceglobal.com\/freight-forwarding\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transport <\/a>costs and <a href=\"https:\/\/porteconomicsmanagement.org\/pemp\/contents\/part3\/ports-energy-transition\/#:~:text=Other%20ports%20lost%20their%20prominence,facilities%20commonly%20found%20in%20ports\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">streamline<\/a> energy imports and exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Africa\u2019s Transnet National Ports Authority is also involved in the project, aiming to take care of port infrastructure and the logistics of the development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in November 2025, Transnet and the French Development Agency (AFD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afd.fr\/en\/press-releases\/transnet-and-french-development-agency-afd-support-european-union-eu-announce-key\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> a partnership supported by the European Union (EU), targeted at decarbonising South Africa\u2019s state-owned ports and railways. The agreement included a $300 million loan from AFD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While LNG isn\u2019t decarbonised, it can operate as a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/1041\/99aa627a6a1aa05686cb8cecc2223e2bc053.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">bridge fuel<\/a>\u2019 to lower emissions by replacing coal and powering clean energy products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South African agricultural exports are also projected to surpass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/economy\/africa\/south-africas-agriculture-outpaces-trade-barriers-with-10-export-growth-i4hsbbex\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$13.7 billion<\/a> in 2026. The sector grew by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hortidaily.com\/article\/9811646\/south-african-agricultural-exports-reach-us-15-1bn-in-2025\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">10%<\/a> in the past year, with leading products being berries, grapes, citrus, nuts, apricots, and cherries.
