Right from the opening round in Wohlen, they managed to secure two surprise race wins. Schlatt was next on the calendar. However, the appeal of competing in a Grand Prix with his brother proved too great. So the Heinzers decided to take part in the World Championship round being held at the same time in Kramolin, Czech Republic. As the race distance and pace are almost double those of the Swiss Championship races, the brothers weren’t expecting too much – which made their eleventh place overall all the more surprising. Driver Marco commented: “I was surprised that we only just missed out on a top-ten finish in our first World Championship race.”

Nevertheless, Heinzer/Heinzer managed to take the lead in the championship standings in the subsequent Swiss Championship races. At the penultimate race in mid-September in Ehrendingen, they extended their lead to 27 points with a second place overall. However, Remo injured his foot in the first heat after taking a wrong step, forcing the team to slow down.

The Swiss Championship final took place in Escholzmatt in Entlebuch. As Martin Betschart had also sustained an injury a week earlier at the SXoN, Remo – who had not yet fully recovered – had to step in as coxswain. After all, the title was not yet in the bag. At least a second-place finish was needed to secure the championship. Marco and Remo Heinzer secured this in the very first race and followed it up with a victory in the second. With his brother’s help, the Illgau native thus secured his sixth Swiss Championship title. Only sidecar motocross legend Robert Grogg has collected more championship trophies, with nine to his name.

SM final standings after 16 races: 1.
