CORTINA D\u2019AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) \u2014 The top-ranked Canadian women couldn\u2019t overcome \u201cstraighter\u201d ice and a sharp Sweden squad, and now the country\u2019s controversial men\u2019s team<\/a> will have the curling<\/a> power\u2019s last chance at Olympic gold at the Milan Cortina Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With Canada already shut out of the mixed team event medals, Rachel Homan\u2019s team was upset by Anna Hasselborg\u2019s Sweden in the semifinals Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re heartbroken right now,\u201d Canada coach Heather Nedohin said.<\/p>\n

Sweden, ranked No. 12, will face Switzerland for gold on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Sweden, which has won the women\u2019s competition three times since curling returned to the Olympic program in 1998, beat Canada 6-3.<\/p>\n

Homan had beaten Hasselborg in all three of their previous meetings this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI woke up this morning and just told the girls, \u2018I really believe we\u2019re winning today,\u2019\u201d Hasselborg said, with one of her children in her arms and another playing at her feet.<\/p>\n

Silvana Tirinzoni\u2019s Switzerland beat the United States 7-4 and will be aiming for their first women\u2019s gold at the Olympics.<\/p>\n

The Swiss took silver behind Canada at the last two world championships after four straight golds in the biggest curling competition outside of the Olympics.<\/p>\n

Canada will play the U.S. for bronze on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously disappointed, but our work is not done here,\u201d Homan said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to come out fighting tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Canadians said they struggled with \u201cstraighter\u201d ice that \u201cmade some shots quite a bit tougher.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Sweden played a great game and kudos to them,\u201d Homan said.<\/p>\n

U.S. vice skip Cory Thiesse, who already won silver in the team event with Korey Dropkin, said she was a little surprised to be facing Canada for bronze.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re the No. 1 ranked team in the world. But it\u2019s the Olympics and that pressure is hard sometimes and you just never know,\u201d Thiesse said. \u201cOur motto this week has just been to keep games close and you never know what is going to happen out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the men\u2019s competition, Canada faces Britain for gold on Saturday, while Norway was playing Switzerland for bronze later Friday.<\/p>\n

The Canadian men were the subject of a controversy<\/a> that got attention far beyond the ice when several players were accused of double-touching the rock, a rules violation.<\/p>\n
