{"id":15939,"date":"2026-02-22T23:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T23:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/15939\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T23:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T23:47:11","slug":"sweden-beats-switzerland-for-gold-in-womens-curling-at-the-milan-cortina-olympics-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/15939\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden beats Switzerland for gold in women&#8217;s curling at the Milan Cortina Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CORTINA D\u2019AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) \u2014 Sweden <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/curling\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">curling<\/a> skip Anna Hasselborg related how her daughter told her before the Olympics that \u201cit\u2019s so boring when you don\u2019t have a medal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So when Hasselborg marched over to her two kids with a glistening gold around her neck on the final day of the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/milan-cortina-2026-winter-olympics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milan Cortina Games<\/a>, there was nothing to complain about \u2014 just a new toy to play with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they will also remember this week,\u201d Hasselborg said. \u201cThey understood there was something big happening. &#8230; I\u2019m so proud to be able to show them that anything is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After upsetting top-ranked Canada in the semifinals, Hasselborg\u2019s team defeated Silvana Tirinzoni\u2019s Switzerland 6-5 to win the women\u2019s competition Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Hasselborg\u2019s 12th-ranked team celebrated by jumping up and down on the ice, with a Swedish flag draped over their shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Three members of Sweden\u2019s team became pregnant after taking bronze at the 2022 Beijing Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecoming a mother, it\u2019s not always easy to find that balance in motivation and that you want to have the fighting spirit because becoming a mom is so much more important than everything else,\u201d Hasselborg said. \u201cBut we found it at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweden has now won a women\u2019s curling medal at six straight Olympics \u2014 stretching back to the last time the Games were held in Italy: Turin in 2006 \u2014 and four women\u2019s golds.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it was Sweden\u2019s sixth Olympic gold and 13th medal overall in Olympic curling \u2014 trailing only Canada (seven golds and 14 medals) in both categories.<\/p>\n<p>Canada beat the United States for bronze on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/milan-cortina-winter-olympics-curling-mixed-doubles-16997d4520c048403dc980b0e026e057\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sweden also won the mixed doubles<\/a> in Cortina, with Isabella and Rasmus Wran\u00e5, the country\u2019s first-ever team of siblings at the Winter Olympics, taking gold.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s competition, Canada\u2019s controversial team <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/curling-olympics-milan-cortina-690d62ca682a54334c6ec26f2bcef6dc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swept aside cheating allegations to beat Britain<\/a> for gold.<\/p>\n<p>The other members of Sweden\u2019s team were Sara McManus, Agnes Knochenhauer and Sofia Scharback.<\/p>\n<p>Knochenhauer knocked out four Swiss red stones in the 10th end to set up Hasselborg\u2019s decisive hammer shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a game-winning shot, for sure, and it\u2019s a team shot,\u201d Knochenhauer said. \u201cI feel like a revenge from the last Olympics when I had a similar shot but I didn\u2019t make it. &#8230; I really wanted to like really go for it. So I\u2019m very proud of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a big tradition of great Swedish curlers,\u201d Knochenhauer said after earning her fourth Olympic medal. \u201cWhen we were younger we could believe that it\u2019s possible even from a smaller country like Sweden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 46, Tirinzoni was the oldest woman in the competition.
