Geothermal exploration in Gruy\u00e8re, Switzerland is progressing with a 3D seismic campaign to augment findings from a previous 2D seismic survey.<\/p>\n

A second seismic data measurement campaign has started in Gruy\u00e8re, Switzerland as part of a geothermal exploration campaign by G\u00e9othermie Pr\u00e9alpes SA.<\/a> The new survey will complement the data from the 2D seismic survey done in 2023<\/a>. Vibro-trucks will be deployed as part of the survey until 13 March 2026.<\/p>\n

The 3D geophysical campaign, set to officially start by 23 February 2026, aims to create a high-resolution 3D visualization of the subsurface. This will allow for the more detailed studies of areas of interest, and the resolution of geological uncertainties, such as the position and geometry of particular formations. This is part of a multi-stage geothermal potential assessment and is a crucial step in identifying the potential drilling site, should the project proceed to that phase.<\/p>\n

The first seismic measurement campaign, done in November 2023, indicated a network of faults located in the area between Vaucens and Monts de Riaz. This is a particularly interesting region, as the fractured geology is ideal for the circulation of geothermal waters. The layers likely to supply this water are located between 3300 and 4500 meters depth.<\/p>\n

The study area for the new campaign is smaller than that of the 2023 campaign. It covers 15 municipalities: \u00a0Pont-en-Ogoz, Sorens, Marsens, Echarlens, Riaz, S\u00e2les, Corbi\u00e8res, Botterens, Morlon, Bulle, Vaulruz, Vuadens, Le P\u00e2quier, Broc, and Gruy\u00e8res. The progress of the seismic campaign can be monitored via the G\u00e9othermie Pr\u00e9alpes SA<\/a> website.<\/p>\n

If a geothermal reservoir with sufficient temperature and pressure is found, it could be used to supply Gruy\u00e8re Energie<\/a>\u2019s district heating (CAD). Depending on the parameters of the thermal waters, it would also be possible to consider electricity production. The heating network is currently supplied by 95% biomass, thus the initiative by Gruy\u00e8re Energie to diversify its energy sources with a clean, local, and reliable alternative.<\/p>\n
