Feb 25 (Reuters) – Novartis said on Wednesday it intends to build a radioligand therapy manufacturing site in Texas, \u200cexpanding its U.S. footprint with what will be \u200cits first such facility in the state and fifth nationwide.<\/p>\n
The investment is \u200bpart of the Swiss drugmaker’s previously announced plan to spend $23 billion to build and expand facilities in the U.S., as global drugmakers rush to shore up their domestic manufacturing \u200ccapacity and inventory in \u2060response to the Trump administration’s hefty tariffs on pharmaceutical imports into the country.<\/p>\n
“The addition of \u2060our fifth RLT manufacturing site in the U.S. strengthens our ability to meet growing demand, building the capabilities needed \u200bto deliver \u200bthese next-generation treatments with the \u200bspeed and precision they \u200crequire,” Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan said.<\/p>\n
Radioligand therapy is a targeted cancer treatment that delivers radiation directly to tumor cells. Novartis already markets radioligand drugs Pluvicto for prostate cancer and Lutathera for rare gastrointestinal tumors.<\/p>\n
The construction of the 46,000-square-foot \u200csite at Denton, Texas will begin \u200bthis year, and it is \u200blikely to become fully \u200boperational in 2028, the company said. The \u200csite is expected to create \u200bjobs in bioengineering, \u200badvanced manufacturing, quality and operations, it said.<\/p>\n
The Texas plant will add to Novartis’ existing network of RLT sites \u200bthat spans \u200cNew Jersey, Indiana and California, along with a recently \u200bannounced facility in Florida.<\/p>\n
