The company said the transformation demonstrates how manufacturing can achieve emissions reduction while maintaining operational performance.

ABB said the plant has cut operational greenhouse gas emissions by 97 percent compared with the 2019 baseline, including a reduction of 530 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in 2024 alone – roughly equal to the annual emissions of about 115 petrol-powered cars.

“Bella Vista reflects our commitment to running operations that are both leaner and cleaner, because efficiency and sustainability must co-exist,” said Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division, in a statement released by ABB.

“By combining renewable electricity, electrification and digital energy management, the team has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions while improving performance.”

ABB said the 53-year-old manufacturing site, which employs more than 150 people, produces low-voltage protection and control components including miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, contactors and capacitors used across Latin America.

The company said the sustainability transition is supported by long-term energy management certification and digital monitoring systems.

The plant has maintained ISO 50001 certification since 2013 and also operates under ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards, integrating quality, environmental and workplace safety requirements into manufacturing processes, ABB added.

ABB said the plant now operates entirely on renewable electricity, with about 15 percent generated through on-site solar photovoltaic systems and the remaining 85 percent supplied through I-REC-certified renewable energy from the grid. The company said day-to-day fossil fuel use has been eliminated.

The manufacturing site has also transitioned to full electrified mobility, including an electric vehicle fleet, charging infrastructure, and an electric delivery vehicle supporting logistics operations. ABB said production efficiency is further supported by high-efficiency IE4 motors and LED lighting installations.

According to ABB, digital energy management tools using advanced analytics and AI-assisted monitoring provide real-time insights into energy consumption to support operational decision-making.

Through its “Zero Waste to Landfill” program, ABB said the site has achieved a waste diversion rate of 91 percent, redirecting most of its 27 tons of annual waste away from landfill each year.

ABB said the Bella Vista plant is now pursuing additional efficiency improvements, including building insulation upgrades and more autonomous energy management capabilities, as part of its future sustainability roadmap.

The company added that the facility is among nearly 40 ABB manufacturing sites worldwide participating in the Mission to Zero™ initiative.

For more information on ABB’s sustainability efforts and Mission to Zero™, visit https://new.abb.com/sustainability

ABB’s Bella Vista plant.
