{"id":21385,"date":"2026-02-28T05:46:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T05:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/21385\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T05:46:42","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T05:46:42","slug":"switzerland-general-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/21385\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland | General Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Switzerland\u2019s President, Karin Keller-Sutter, recalled that, 80\u00a0years ago, 50\u00a0States adopted the United Nations Charter in San Francisco and were &#8220;determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind&#8221;. \u00a0Today, a just, lasting peace in the Middle East and Ukraine still seems out of reach, and autocratic tendencies are gaining ground, including in Europe. \u00a0\u201cWe need be honest with ourselves: \u00a0these developments have no simple solutions, either at the international or national levels,\u201d she said. \u00a0Two errors must be avoided: \u00a0pointing the finger only at others and leaving international organizations to work alone, as if they were completely detached from States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultilateralism, international organizations and the United Nations are essential for the peaceful coexistence of peoples, for global economic prosperity, for the resolution of challenges including migration, climate change and the digital transition,\u201d she stressed. \u00a0The 2030\u00a0Agenda for Sustainable Development is a central pillar of the Pact for the Future. \u00a0\u201cWe must implement these road maps without delay,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cAs the UN&#8217;s leading operational centre, Geneva has strong expertise in many areas that are crucial to our future, particularly those related to humanity and innovation; it is a unique, unparalleled ecosystem for reflection, discussion and concerted action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security and freedom are essential prerequisites for economic growth and prosperity, she said. \u00a0They require institutions that are legally sound, reliable and capable of taking action, and they require political, social and financial stability, she continued. \u00a0\u201cWe cannot simply delegate our responsibilities to an international organization,\u201d she stressed, also urging the United Nations to take a critical look at itself and consider whether it is still able to fulfil its role as the 50\u00a0States intended in San Francisco on 25\u00a0June\u00a01945.<\/p>\n<p>Multilateralism is undergoing unprecedented upheaval, she noted, calling on all States to make a firm commitment to uphold the principles and values enshrined in the Charter. \u00a0\u201cWe are, however, in the midst of a critical phase, and the next chapter of history has yet to be written,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cThis also means that we can play an active role in shaping it.\u201d\u00a0She urged Member States to guard against arrogance and complacency and \u201cgo to work at home, in our countries and together at the United Nations\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Switzerland\u2019s President, Karin Keller-Sutter, recalled that, 80\u00a0years ago, 50\u00a0States adopted the United Nations Charter in San Francisco and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":21386,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[14079,14080,17,2746],"class_list":{"0":"post-21385","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-switzerland","8":"tag-general-assembly","9":"tag-general-debate","10":"tag-switzerland","11":"tag-united-nations"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21385","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=21385"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21385\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/21386"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=21385"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=21385"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=21385"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
