I tried coughing loudly, rattling the ladder to my bunk, and even, when sleep deprivation really hit, sticking my leg down to kick the offender\u2019s mattress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nothing worked \u2013 she continued to sleep as soundly as someone who had spent their day downing pints at La Folie Douce. Perhaps that was exactly how she\u2019d spent her day \u2013 the train had left Bourg-Saint-Maurice, at the foot of <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/ski\/resort-guides\/les-arcs-ski-holiday-guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Les Arcs ski resort;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Les Arcs ski resort<\/a>, at 9.33pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It had been a long time since I\u2019d slept in a six-bed dormitory, and snoring sits atop my list of pet peeves, along with people who walk slowly because they\u2019re texting. There wasn\u2019t enough room to swing a cat in our berth, but even so, all the other passengers had managed to slot in enormous suitcases, overstuffed Osprey backpacks and often skis too, in a giant game of winter-gear Tetris. From my lofty vantage point on the top bunk, it looked like a documentary about hoarders. I couldn\u2019t see the floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.travelski.com\/travelski-night-express-results\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Travelski Night Express;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">The Travelski Night Express<\/a>, which launched in December, has perhaps the simplest timetable of any train line in history \u2013 but is a fantastic boon for <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/ski\/advice\/skiing-slopes-france-switzerland-austria-train\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:skiers who prefer to reach the slopes by rail;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">skiers who prefer to reach the slopes by rail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Travelski Night train\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"952\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/bf27e3013d2a9bada6777266788ed111.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018You couldn\u2019t ask for a cheaper or more efficient way\u2019 to reach the Alps, says our writer &#8211; Travelski Night train<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Available through mid-March, it runs once a week in each direction, leaving Paris Gare de Lyon at 10.52pm on Friday, calling at Mo\u00fbtiers and Aim\u00e9-la-Plagne, before arriving at Bourg-Saint-Maurice just after 8am on Saturday. From there, the funicular up to Arc 1600, where you\u2019ve got direct access to the slopes, is free for rail travellers. On the return leg, it leaves Bourg-Saint-Maurice on Saturday evenings, chugging into Paris Gare de Lyon on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It means you can squeeze as much skiing as possible out of your <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/french-alps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:time in the Alps;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">time in the Alps<\/a>, getting eight full days on the slopes instead of the usual six days on a Saturday-to-Saturday holiday. (Saturdays, typically wasted as changeover days, are also when the slopes are quieter, and lift passes are often cheaper.)<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Les Arcs\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"601\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/456fc40f3aca37fb999b9a8482455fe0.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The return journey leaves from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, near Les Arcs &#8211; iStockphoto<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While it sounds great in theory, the reality is that you\u2019ll need to sacrifice a large degree of comfort in exchange for those two extra days in the snow. This is certainly not the Orient Express, as I discovered. It reminded me of night trains I\u2019d taken around India in my early 20s. In my bunk, there wasn\u2019t even enough space for me to sit up straight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Each bunk has a plug socket, a pillow, a blanket and a sleeping bag liner sheet, which the French call a sac \u00e0 viande (meat sack). I felt like a bit of meat grilling because the heating was on full blast. Luckily, I love sleeping in sauna-like conditions, but the cold-side-of-the-pillow brigade would have hated it. Then there are just two toilets and three sinks for teeth brushing for a coach of 60 people (split into 10 dorms of six). If that doesn\u2019t sound like enough, you\u2019d be right. One of the toilets was blocked for the entire journey.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Unmade bunkbeds in a narrow train compartment\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"988\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/daa51c15f23e7bcdbd798674164b6e2a.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Light sleepers may have trouble in the train\u2019s tight cabins<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But if you can get over the lack of space, the dire toilets and the potential hazard of bunking with someone who snores louder than a pug, there are plenty of perks to the Travelski Night Express. Prices are reasonable \u2013 from \u20ac80 (\u00a370) one-way or as little \u20ac60pp (\u00a352) if you can find a group of six to book out a whole cabin. The <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/10\/26\/to-restore-britain-start-with-the-rail-dining-car\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:buffet car;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">buffet car<\/a> serves up ridiculously cheap <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/recipes\/everyday\/cheese\/tartiflette-recipe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tartiflette;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">tartiflette<\/a> and sausage and mash for \u20ac10.50, and good-value beer and wine too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The train also performed a feat I\u2019d consider extraordinary in either France or the UK: It arrived early, chugging into the station 15 minutes ahead of its scheduled time.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Smiling woman in a coat outside a train with a logo saying Travelski Night Express\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"601\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1c248e2056ddbd39c1e5bb474d267b9b.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anna Richards was all smiles before boarding the Travelski Night Express<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Basic it may be, but my night on board the Travelski Night Express filled me with nostalgia for my backpacking days, when I\u2019d book sleeper trains to save a night\u2019s accommodation, armed with a battered Lonely Planet and a brick phone that didn\u2019t work abroad.
