{"id":259,"date":"2026-02-11T09:46:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T09:46:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/259\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T09:46:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T09:46:26","slug":"2-skiers-dead-as-avalanche-rocks-italian-alps-site-near-2026-winter-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/259\/","title":{"rendered":"2 skiers dead as avalanche rocks Italian alps site near 2026 Winter Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two skiers have died in an avalanche that happened <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/06\/sports\/2026-winter-olympic-games-kicks-off-with-fireworks-star-performances-and-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near the site of the Winter Olympics<\/a> in the Italian alps on Saturday, local authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Fire and rescue officials said a serious avalanche accident left three skiers caught in the early afternoon, two of whom later died and the third person sustaining injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The avalanche happened on Alpe Meriggio in Valtellina. <\/p>\n<p>The risk of avalanches in the area was very high at the time, according to AINEVA, Italy\u2019s snow and avalanches risk association.<\/p>\n<p>Valtellina is a major hub for the 2026 games, with Bormio hosting men\u2019s alpine skiing and ski mountaineering, and Livigno hosting freestyle skiing and snowboarding, valley officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Bormio is approximately 40 miles from the site of the avalanche, and Livigno is about 60 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>A helicopter worked to rescue one of the skiers who was buried under the snow, but they were pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7716263;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38449540\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/two-skiers-died-avalanche-happened-120896028.jpg\" alt=\"Two Italian fire brigade rescue workers inside a helicopter.\" class=\"wp-image-38449540\"  \/>The avalanche happened on Alpe Meriggio in Valtellina.
