Two people were hospitalized after a driver slammed their car into a vehicle that was broken down on the shoulder of Route 22, shutting down the roadway in Lake Zurich, police said.<\/p>\n

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 7:07 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 22 and Orchard Pond Drive in Lake Zurich for a vehicle crash with injuries.<\/p>\n

Fire crews arrived and found two vehicles involved \u2014 one off the roadway \u2014 with moderate to heavy damage.<\/p>\n

Officers arrived and found a crash involving a red Mercedes-Benz SUV and a white Honda Civic.<\/p>\n

Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney said an investigation showed a 37-year-old Barrington woman was driving the Mercedes-Benz westbound on Route 22.<\/p>\n

She pulled her car over on the shoulder of Route 22 in the area of Orchard Pond Drive due to a mechanical issue.<\/p>\n

The woman called for a tow truck and was awaiting its arrival as the white Honda approached the area in the westbound lanes, Gaffney said.<\/p>\n

The Honda, driven by a 32-year-old DeKalb man, drove into the back of the Mercedes-Benz.<\/p>\n

The investigation revealed the Mercedes was completely on the shoulder to the right of the fog line, Gaffney said.<\/p>\n

The driver of the Honda did not offer a statement as to why he did not see the Mercedes, Gaffney said.<\/p>\n

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and both vehicles were towed from the scene due to the extent of damage.<\/p>\n

Gaffney said Route 22 was closed for approximately a full hour during the investigation and reopened around 8:15 p.m.<\/p>\n

The driver of the Honda was cited for improper lane usage.
