They were paying no tariffs when sending stuff over here &#8212; like nobody could believe it &#8212; and we had a $42 billion deficit. We weren\u2019t taking anything, and I said, \u2018We have to do something, because we have to even that up a little bit.\u2019 I didn\u2019t have to get anything all at once, so I put on a 30% tariff, which was too low. Still, we were having a big deficit, but it was half the deficit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ET logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/118783427.cms.png\" width=\"90%\"\/>Live Events<br \/>The situation heated up after a phone call from Keller-Sutter, whom Trump mistakenly called Switzerland\u2019s Prime Minister.<br \/>\u201cShe was very aggressive but nice, very aggressive. She said, \u2018Sir, we are a small country. We can&#8217;t do this. We can&#8217;t do this.\u2019 I couldn&#8217;t get her off the phone,\u201d Trump recalled. Despite her repeated insistence that Switzerland was \u201csmall, small,\u201d Trump held firm: \u201cYou may be a small country, but we have a $42 billion deficit with you.\u201dFrustrated by what he described as the Swiss leader\u2019s tone, Trump said he decided not to grant a reduction but instead raise the tariff to 39 percent. \u201cYou know Switzerland, you think of it as ultra-chic, ultra-perfect. They are not. Some are much more egregious,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the rhetoric, US and Swiss negotiators eventually struck a deal in November to lower the tariff to 15 percent, with Swiss firms committing $200 billion in investments in the US by 2028. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier in January, during the Davos Summit, Trump said the tariff reduction came after pressure from Swiss companies, including Rolex, but he left open the possibility that the rates could rise again. \u201cI reduced it because I don\u2019t want to hurt people.
