GENEVA \u2014 Republican Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan, R-131 of Manchester, may well face his first opponent since the first time he was elected to office in 2020.<\/p>\n
Phillip Fleming, who lives in the town of Geneva, has announced he is seeking the office as a Democrat.<\/p>\n
The 131st District covers parts of Ontario, Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Broome, and Chenango counties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to formally announce my candidacy to seek the office of New York State Assembly, District 131 on the Democratic line,\u201d Fleming said in a press release. \u201cMy campaign\u2019s top priorities are education, behavioral health, immigration rights, economic development, human rights (e.g. LGBTQ+, civil rights, abortion rights), and community engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fleming is employed as a teacher\u2019s aide at Geneva High School and holds teaching assistant certification. He said he is a Pathway to Teaching B.S. program candidate at Roberts Wesleyan University, where he will pursue dual certification in adolescent social studies and special education.<\/p>\n
Fleming said he has received endorsements from the Democratic committees in Ontario, Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, and Chenango counties, with endorsements pending from the Broome County Democratic Committee and the Patriot PAC.<\/p>\n
Fleming noted he is a New York State-certified peer specialist (provisional) and a certified recovery peer advocate with 17 years of experience in peer support. He said he \u201cis dedicated to promoting peer support values and principles and to empowering peers to lead self\u2011directed lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Fleming, he volunteers with Fountain House, a national health support group, the New York Association of Black Psychologists, the Association of Black Psychologists, and the Ontario Democratic Committee.<\/p>\n
Fleming said his education includes studies at Berea College, Columbus State Community College, Ohio State University, PESI, and the Harlem Family Institute.<\/p>\n
