ZURICH, March 7 (Reuters) – Roche expects its agreement with the U.S. government will keep its medicines exempt from the \u200ccurrent round of import tariffs, but its diagnostics division \u200cremains exposed and could face renewed duties after an initial 150-day period, Chairman \u200bSeverin Schwan said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Roche was one of nine major pharmaceutical companies that agreed a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump in December to cut the prices of their medicines in return for \u200cremoving the threat of \u2060tariffs for three years.<\/p>\n
“As far as pharmaceuticals are concerned, we assume our agreement with the government is \u2060binding and that we will continue to be exempt from tariffs on the import of medicines,” Schwan told Swiss newspaper Neue Zuercher Zeitung.<\/p>\n
“But \u200bour \u200bdiagnostics business continues to be significantly \u200baffected,” he added.<\/p>\n
Roche’s diagnostics \u200cdivision, which generated sales of nearly 14 billion Swiss francs in 2025, exported a large share of its tests and instruments from Switzerland and other European countries to the United States, Schwan said.<\/p>\n
Roche also produced diagnostics products in the U.S., which faced import \u200ctariffs from China, he said.<\/p>\n
“But because China \u200bhas introduced retaliatory tariffs, we end \u200bup, as a U.S. \u200bnet exporter, paying tariffs twice. That’s absurd,” he \u200csaid.<\/p>\n
Schwan said he expected the U.S. \u200bgovernment to impose \u200bimport tariffs again under a different legal basis after the 150-day limit on tariffs expires.<\/p>\n
Roche had no plans to split \u200boff its diagnostics \u200cdivision, he said. “That is not a topic at all. \u200bWe are sticking with it,” he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n
