(WITN) &#8211; A possible electric rate hike for New Bern residents is on the table at tonight\u2019s aldermen meeting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A public hearing on the electric rates is listed on the agenda for tonight\u2019s meeting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The possible hike for residents comes after the city of New Bern\u2019s rate was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.witn.com\/2026\/02\/10\/city-new-bern-sees-electricity-rate-spike-by-45\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.witn.com\/2026\/02\/10\/city-new-bern-sees-electricity-rate-spike-by-45\/\">raised by 4.5%<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">City officials say New Bern\u2019s wholesale power supplier, the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency, in partnership with Duke Energy, is the one driving up the rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The aldermen will decide whether the cost will fall on residents and by how much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Tonight\u2019s agenda packet shows that the board will consider approving a recommended overall 2% increase for customers, including a possible average increase of 0.9% for its residential customers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The public is invited to weigh in on the proposal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">If the hike is approved, tonight\u2019s materials say the new rate will be effective April 1st. <\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WITN.
