Swiss conglomerate Nestl\u00e9<\/a> is exploring the potential sale of Blue Bottle Coffee<\/a>, according to a Reuters report<\/a>\u00a0citing three unnamed sources.<\/p>\n

Nestl\u00e9 acquired Oakland, California-born Blue Bottle Coffee in 2017<\/a> in an approximately $700 million deal that shocked much of the specialty coffee world, continuing a trend toward big-money consolidation in craft-focused or \u201cThird Wave\u201d<\/a> specialty coffee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reuters reported that Nestl\u00e9 is working with an investment bank to \u201creview options, including a potential sale\u201d of Blue Bottle, which currently has approximately 78 U.S. cafes, plus dozens more in six other countries.<\/p>\n

In response to a Daily Coffee News inquiry, Nestl\u00e9 declined to comment on this story. DCN has also reached out to Morgan Stanley for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The potential Blue Bottle divestment is part of a broader portfolio review under the watch of new Nestl\u00e9 CEO Philipp Navratil<\/a>, who was appointed in September following the dismissal of Laurent Freixe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It also comes as at least nine Blue Bottle Coffee locations in the U.S. have unionized. Some 120 Blue Bottle workers walked off the job<\/a> over the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, alleging unfair labor practices and a lack of progress in contract negotiations.<\/p>\n

Blue Bottle represents something of a higher-end outlier in Nestl\u00e9\u2019s global coffee portfolio, which is dominated by brands such as Nescaf\u00e9, Nespresso and Starbucks Coffee At Home<\/a>. Coffee conglomerate JDE Peet\u2019s, which is being acquired by Keurig Dr Pepper<\/a>, has taken a similar approach with its ownership of Stumptown Coffee Roasters and Intelligentsia Coffee, two brands that helped grow the \u201cThird Wave\u201d coffee movement alongside Blue Bottle.<\/p>\n
