How does ETH Zurich conduct research\u00a0involving\u00a0animals? Why are rodents chosen as model organisms?\u00a0What\u00a0is\u00a0a typical day\u00a0like\u00a0for a\u00a0rodent? Anyone wishing to get a realistic, first-hand impression of laboratory conditions will have the chance to join a guided tour of the rodent facility in spring and early summer 2026, when the ETH Phenomics\u00a0Center\u00a0(EPIC) opens\u00a0its doors\u00a0again\u00a0to visitors.<\/p>\n
During the roughly three-hour tour, participants will learn about the housing, husbandry and welfare of rodents at ETH. Staff from EPIC\u2019s rodent facility and members of the Animal Welfare & 3R Office will explain the scientific reasons for animal experimentation, the strict legal standards they\u00a0are required to\u00a0follow and the importance of expertise, care and responsibility in the daily handling of the animals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The tours offer\u00a0a\u00a0valuable insight into the significance of animal research at ETH\u00a0Zurich,\u00a0while also ensuring transparency about the animals\u2019 living conditions and the responsibilities the university undertakes in this area.<\/p>\n
