UPPER BERN TWP., Pa. \u2014 The conversation surrounding a proposed immigration detention facility in Upper Bern Township is continuing as local leaders prepare to hear from residents.<\/p>\n
Township supervisors are expected to discuss the issue during their monthly meeting Thursday evening, where community members will have an opportunity to share their concerns about the potential facility.<\/p>\n
The Department of Homeland Security has been considering a warehouse on Mountain Road in Upper Bern Township as a possible detention center.<\/p>\n
During a stop in Berks County on Wednesday, Governor Josh Shapiro said he has been clear about his opposition to ICE detention centers in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do not want these ICE detention centers in Pennsylvania. I\u2019ve been very outspoken about that,\u201d Shapiro said.\u2028<\/p>\n
Federal officials purchased the warehouse last month for more than $87 million. If the federal government moves forward with the project, Shapiro says the facility would still need to meet strict state requirements.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor them to try and stand up a facility like that is going to require them to meet all kinds of obligations to the people of Pennsylvania on public health, public safety and environmental protection,\u201d Shapiro said.<\/p>\n
The governor added that if those requirements are not met, the state could block the permits needed for the facility to operate.<\/p>\n
\u201cShould they not be able to meet that burden, we would not issue the permit. Without a permit\u2026 they can\u2019t open these facilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Township supervisors are expected to hear comments from residents before their meeting begins.
