A woman has died after a ski gondola incident at a popular resort.<\/p>\n

The gondola tumbled down the mountain at Engelberg ski resort<\/a> in the Swiss Alps on Wednesday morning, March 18. Video footage has emerged that shows the gondola tumble down<\/a> Mt Titlis and flip several times.<\/p>\n

Police said the gondola detached from the cable “for reasons that are still unclear” at about 11am local time. Witnesses have said there were strong winds at the time of the crash and the cause of the crash<\/a> is being investigated.<\/p>\n

The women, 61, has been identified as a local to the region. The police confirmed she was the only passenger in the Titlis Xpress cart when it detached from the cable.<\/p>\n

The gondola departed from the Tr\u00fcbsee station and was climbing the middle section of the mountain when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n

Air rescue service, ambulances and police officers all attended the rescue operation.<\/p>\n

The managers of the ski lifts shared their shock at the crash and director Norbert Patt said “our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones”.<\/p>\n

Beren Akkaya, 14, a school child at a local ski camp, also witnessed the crash.<\/p>\n

“I was really shocked. We were then afraid to go back down in the gondola,” Beren said.<\/p>\n

The cable car service was suspended.
