CALGARY \u2014 Kerri Einarson\u2019s curling team took the silver medal at the world women\u2019s championship with a 7-5 loss to Switzerland in Sunday\u2019s final.<\/p>\n
Einarson\u2019s foursome out of Manitoba\u2019s Gimli Curling Club was trying for its first world title.<\/p>\n
But Xenia Schwaller\u2019s young team from Zurich prevailed for gold in the championship game in Calgary\u2019s WinSport Event Centre.<\/p>\n
Canada trailed 6-5 heading into the 10th end, and couldn\u2019t generate a steal to win or force an extra end.<\/p>\n
Einarson ranked fifth and Schwaller sixth in World Curling women\u2019s rankings.<\/p>\n
Schwaller\u2019s foursome, with an average age of 22.5, beat four-time world champion Silvana Tirinzoni twice in a best-of-three final to represent Switzerland in Calgary.<\/p>\n
After dropping their first game in Calgary to Japan, the 2024 world junior champions rattled off 11 straight wins to top the 13-country standings. <\/p>\n
Canada ranked second at 10-2 with a pair of extra end losses, including one to Schwaller. <\/p>\n
Schwaller\u2019s runback double hit with her first throw of the 10th made Einarson\u2019s chance for a steal slim. <\/p>\n
And when the Canadian skip was light with her final draw attempt, Schwaller, Selina Gafner, Fabienne Rieder and Selina Rychiger celebrated without their skip having to throw her last stone.<\/p>\n
The Swiss had hammer to start Sunday\u2019s final as the higher seed. After blanking the first, they scored two. <\/p>\n
After blanking the third, Canada countered with a deuce. Momentum swung from Canada to Switzerland in the fifth end. <\/p>\n
Schwaller missed a finesse tap and left Canada shot stone. Einarson let the Swiss off the hook when the skip was light on a draw to the other side of the rings. Schwaller had an open hit for two and a 4-2 lead.<\/p>\n
But after Canada was forced to take one in the sixth, the hosts stole a point in the seventh to tie the game 4-4.<\/p>\n
Einarson drew to split the house and lie two. Schwaller\u2019s stone rolled wide on her attempted hit for one.<\/p>\n
But the Swiss got two back in the eighth. Einarson\u2019s hit rolled the wrong way to leave Schwaller a draw for the deuce and a 6-4 lead.<\/p>\n
The Canadian skip faced a tough double raise to score two in the ninth. Canada scored one to trail by a point heading into the 10th.<\/p>\n
In pool play, Einarson, vice Valerie Sweeting and second Shannon Birchard ranked second to their Swiss counterparts in shooting accuracy. <\/p>\n
Karlee Burgess, who joined the team in early 2025, topped all leads at 93.6 per cent accuracy and was named to the all-star team.<\/p>\n
Canada and Switzerland met in the final a third straight year after Canada\u2019s Rachel Homan beat Tirinzoni for gold in both 2025 and 2024.<\/p>\n
Sweden\u2019s Isabella Wranaa defeated Japan\u2019s Satsuki Fujisawa 8-5 for the bronze medal. <\/p>\n
The men\u2019s world championship opens Friday in Ogden, Utah. <\/p>\n
Matt Dunstone will wear the Maple Leaf for the first time after winning his first Brier earlier this month in St. John\u2019s, N.L.<\/p>\n
Canada opens Friday afternoon against South Korea.<\/p>\n
Einarson claimed her fifth Canadian title in Mississauga, Ont., on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n
Her team can return to the 2027 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown as Team Canada. <\/p>\n
