{"id":36855,"date":"2026-03-23T04:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T04:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/36855\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T04:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T04:27:08","slug":"glencore-workers-to-receive-no-pay-awu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/36855\/","title":{"rendered":"Glencore workers to receive no pay: AWU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Australian Workers\u2019 Union (<a href=\"https:\/\/awu.net.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AWU<\/a>) took protected industrial action late last week in the form of partial work bans at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Glencore\u2019s<\/a> (LSE:GLEN) Townsville refinery in Queensland. <\/p>\n<p>Glencore has sent correspondence workers on Friday 20 March, advising they will not be paid if they participate in the partial work bans regardless of any other work they perform. <\/p>\n<p>On 25 March 2025, negotiations began with AWU members, but to date, the mining giant has not offered workers a \u2018decent\u2019 wage increase that meets the rising cost of living. <\/p>\n<p>This news comes after AWU announced members working at the Townsville refinery took protected industrial action. As <a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com.au\/glencores-awu-members-take-industrial-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">previously reported<\/a>, AWU gave notice of protected industrial action, that workers would walk off the job on Friday 13 March if the issues can\u2019t be resolved at a bargaining meeting scheduled for 12 March.<\/p>\n<p>AWU Queensland Branch Stacey Schinnerl says Glencore\u2019s response shows \u201chow little respect this community has for their workforce\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a multi-national company that happily made billions of dollars off the sweat of these workers,\u201d Schinnerl says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA multi-national company that was all too happy to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com.au\/glencore-reaches-600-million-mount-isa-copper-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$600 million<\/a> tax-payer funded government bailout because they ran their assets into the ground.
