And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. To wit, the Zurich Insurance Group share price has climbed 55% in five years, easily topping the market return of 13% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven’t been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 17%, including dividends.

So let’s investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business’ progress.

Trump has pledged to “unleash” American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company’s share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Zurich Insurance Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 13% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 9% over the same period. So it seems the market isn’t so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

SWX:ZURN Earnings Per Share Growth November 13th 2025

We know that Zurich Insurance Group has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Zurich Insurance Group’s TSR for the last 5 years was 101%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there’s no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

It’s nice to see that Zurich Insurance Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 17% over the last year. That’s including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 15%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. Before forming an opinion on Zurich Insurance Group you might want to consider the cold hard cash it pays as a dividend.
