Training data in one cloud, inference in another, edge deployments duct-taped together, and GPU clusters somewhere in the middle or where you can rent them at the right price. For CDOs trying to govern this, the existing architecture was never designed for distributed intelligence. And it shows.

Equinix’s answer, unveiled recently, is the Distributed AI Hub, powered by Equinix Fabric Intelligence. One unified framework, 280 data centers, private, low-latency connectivity across model companies, GPU clouds, data platforms, and AI frameworks — all in a vendor-neutral environment.

That vendor-neutral piece is the whole point.

Hyperscaler AI marketplaces are built to keep you inside their ecosystem. The Distributed AI Hub is explicitly not that. You compose your own stack from best-of-breed providers. “AI isn’t centralized — but the right infrastructure can make it run as seamlessly as if it were,” said Jonathan Lin, chief business officer at Equinix.

For CDOs, that’s not a tagline but a governance unlock.

The data residency problem, finally addressed

Running inference close to the data that fuels it has been a persistent headache. Shipping datasets across regions is slow, expensive, and regularly collides with data sovereignty requirements. The Hub’s private interconnection is built to keep compute close to data, not force data to chase compute.

The urgency is real. Mary Johnston Turner, research vice president, digital infrastructure strategies at IDC, puts a number on it: “By 2027, 80% of enterprises will deploy distributed edge infrastructure to improve the latency and responsiveness of AI applications.”

Agentic AI is accelerating that timeline. Most enterprise infrastructure isn’t ready.

Security built into the fabric

A distributed AI ecosystem without unified threat detection is just a large attack surface with good marketing. Equinix’s first major integration addresses this directly: Palo Alto Networks‘ Prisma AIRS platform layered on the Hub, for real-time protection of agent and model interactions. Prisma AIRS also runs on Equinix Network Edge, pushing policy enforcement to where workloads actually live.

Lloyd Taylor, chief technology officer and chief information security officer at Alembic, frames what CDOs actually care about here: “It’s more than compute and data, it’s controlling where the data lives and how the compute runs.” He calls Equinix’s approach of “placement, governance, and predictable performance into the same architecture” what makes distributed AI “viable at enterprise scale.”

The infrastructure arms race just got a neutral referee.

Face it, the enterprise AI infrastructure is a mess.
