Julian Nagelsmann and his squad made this an absolute thriller out of an international friendly. With lots of polarizing performances from the starting lineup, Nagelsmann has some big decisions to make heading into the match against Ghana. Do the poor performances demand change or will the former Bayern Munich coach stick to his guns? Let’s jump into performances.

Jersey Swap: Dan Ndoye

The Swiss attacker was relentless against the Germans, especially in the first half. Ndoye gave Switzerland their first goal and generally cause havoc for Germany’s backline. Breel Embolo and Granit Xhaka are both solid mentions as well.

Der Kaiser: Joshua Kimmich

If you looked at the score line, you would think Germany’s backline had an all time bad day. That wasn’t necessarily the case though as most of the blame could be put on Nico Schlotterbeck and a major off day for Oliver Baumann. If Jonas Urbig were still available, the Bayern young gun would have been a good shout to start next match.

Most of the backline had strong performances though — especially Kimmich, who won virtually every one of his duels. While his distribution wasn’t perfect, his defensive stops made the difference.

Fußballgott: Serge Gnabry

The Bayern Munich veteran had another gear showing for Die Mannschaft today. Gnabry had deservedly earned a spot in this squad and he was incredibly sharp when called upon in this match.

While Gnabry is rarely the star of the show, he showed yet again why he is back in top form.

A quick mention should be made to Anton Stach who was brilliant in the limited time he had on the pitch. While Nagelsmann seems set on his ways to start Aleksandar Pavlovic and Goretzka this summer, it might be time for Stach to play a larger role.

Der Bomber: Lennart Karl

It was a bad day for Kai Havertz and even more so, Leroy Sané. While Havertz didn’t play horrible, he didn’t take the chances given to him and hasn’t earned a start against Ghana over Nick Woltemade or Denis Undav. On the other hand, Sané was even less impressive and made virtually zero impact on the pitch. It didn’t feel like he spoiled opportunities but simply didn’t make his presence felt.

As for Karl, who made his senior debut tonight, he has incredibly energetic in the attack and in defense as well ensuring Swiss could not find a late equalizer. His performance tonight could mean a starting lineup spot on Monday against Ghana.

Meister of the Match: Florian Wirtz

Was this award really ever in doubt? Wirtz yet again had a flawless performance for Germany. He single-handedly won this game for Die Mannschaft. Two goals and two assists against a strong side on the road is a simply mind boggling performance. It is hard to make an argument against Wirtz being the best player in this squad at the moment.

Now imagine what Wirtz can do with Jamal Musiala integrated and providing the Liverpool star with even more space and creativity.

If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor…

Join the conversation!

Sign up for a user account and get:

New, improved notifications system!

Comment on articles, community posts

Rec comments, community posts

What a match.
